Trying to learn more about (Tiantai) Buddhist meditation practices. Interesting stuff. I'm not sure whether I agree with the underlying metaphysics, so I am trying to make sense of the realizations they have using phenomenology.

Of course, maybe I'm just twisting these practices beyond recognition!

Reading some of this and it's so goddamn bad. I'm an idiot that only reads academic philosophy, but prose can be good, right? That's a real possibility?
Vanity Fair's West Coast Editor Olivia Nuzzi was a star political correspondent until scandal led her into exile—and to a California up in flames.

In an excerpt from her book, ‘American Canto,’ she takes stock of scorched earth.

She flamed out and she faded away. 'Vanity Fair'’s West Coast Editor returns to the written word to survey scorched earth.

What always baffled me about the idea that "Rome fell because of degeneracy" is that it worshipped Greco-Roman gods for most of its lifespan and only became Christian right at the end.

Who knows, maybe if they kept on doing rites to the genii and praising Janus the empire might still exist today!

(🧵) Been reading Frankfurt's "Freedom of the Will and the Concept of a Person" more and it's both a very good paper and also seems to be missing something fundamental about how we exercise our will.

Frankfurt claims that freedom of will is all about the alignment of first and second-order desires.

The latest 'moderate' democratic strategy playbook has dropped, and as usual it is completely devoid of any values, vision, or ideology. (It is literally called 'deciding to win.')

Why would anyone vote for a party that seemingly doesn't believe in anything? decidingtowin.org#executive-su...
Deciding To Win – Toward A Common Sense Renewal of the Democratic Party
Deciding to Win aims to provide the most comprehensive account to date of why Democrats lost and what our party needs to do to win again.

Remembering when on Twitter people were trying to hurt my feelings they would point out that I was going bald. It's like, bro, I am literally an academic and an (aspiring) philosopher. Caring about ideas and not vanity is kind of my whole deal.

By the way, if I ever misinterpret any philosophy in my works, feel free to let me know. I would love to be corrected. I see saying wrong things generally as the precursor to saying more right ones. :)

Been reading Sartre and Husserl, trying to figure out their different senses of Ego. It seems that for Sartre the ego is constructed, and almost fake. But for Husserl the ego is this transcendent thing that is almost platonic. I would like a middle way, please!!!
