The central lie of the Trump regime is that they’re doing all this on behalf of working people—rather than the corrupt billionaires who are lining their pockets.

i think it should be a bigger story that the president held a meeting with a foreign head of state where he ranted about the most gutter white supremacist propaganda you can find on the internet

THREAD: We recently heard that the Trump administration was leaning on the government of Gambia to help Elon Musk. For weeks, our team made phone calls, wrote letters and knocked on folks’ doors to try to confirm it. But we were stuck.

So our reporters got on a plane to Banjul. 1/

Step 1. Announce arbitrary tariffs for each country
Step 2. When markets crash, pause those tariffs and say they're just leverage for deals
Step 3. Promise deals
Step 4. Fail to make deals
Step 5. Announce arbitrary tariffs for each country

...and yes, I find it hard to keep my cool, sometimes.

It’s super funny that they want goods made in America, the country who famously found it easier to do an entire transatlantic slave trade than simply learn how to grow rice.
These conservatives clamoring for completely US-made goods are expecting a lot for $7.25/hr.

What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

Good explainer of Latino support for Trump.
The small city of Reading in central Pennsylvania is around 70 percent Latino.

In 2024, it shifted toward Trump by a staggering net 16 points.

I spent some time trying to figure out why that happened. The result is this piece. I hope you'll check it out:

The average Fox News viewer has no idea that Musk is tearing down a system that allowed this country to rule the world for the past 75 years. And when their standard of living slips dramatically in the next five years they still won’t understand because their TV will blame it on some poor scapegoat.

I wonder why Musk is focused on the federal civilian workforce (4% of the budget) and not federal contractors, which account for 3x more annual spending and are more prone to waste, fraud, and abuse?

If you wanted to encourage more countries to join BRICS and other non Western oriented trade groups, Trump's use of trade as a tool of domination (see Colombia, Canada, and Mexico) is the poster child for how you would do it.
