As summer seems to finally be unfolding in the North a reminder of the beauty of the rivers down south. Looking forward to seeing these lands again soon
Roadtrip back from Jasper this morning. Passed this cool/huge bear wrestling statue in Blue River (?). But for me the main thing is always to admire the beautiful desert landscapes of the BC southern interior. The sage and sand, and brown hills are way more beautiful for me than the Rockies.

Waiting to find one of this quality on the Nahanni
#FossilFriday: Asteroceras obtusum, a classic Lower Lias ammonite from Lyme Regis. This specimen belonged to Manchester geologist John Eddowes Bowman (1785–1841) and was probably purchased from #MaryAnning when he visited Lyme in August 1841. It is now in the collections @morethanadodo.bsky.social

Of course it was this I particularly wanted to see again: the Anning’s 1811-12 ichthyosaur, first described in a paper read 211 years ago today at a meeting of the Royal Society. It changed hands several times before it was acquired by the British Museum at auction in 1819.

Interesting to see some data on our experience of a very windy spring in the upper Yukon watershed #whitehorse
Also, can anyone in Southeast Alaska confirm if May was unusually (record) windy?

Puffins are social, so to attract them to Maine's rocky islands, National Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program put out decoys to attract real birds.

This puffin is trying to fit in with his new friend by standing on one leg.

Seabird peer-pressure can be intense.

Maybe the true wilderness is found on the NYC subway?
This is exactly what the NYC subway is like, and it's beautiful (trimmed video by Ian O'Connor via instagram.com/p/DAbHW7txiiv)

The Mendenhall Wetlands are of outstanding value to waterbirds, certain grassland and wet-meadow songbirds, and raptors, and are a key migratory waterfowl and shorebird stopover location on coastal Alaska.
