I've been thinking about how people promote their work here –what resonates and what doesn't. I understand and respect the need to share what you've done in hope that others respond/buy/read/review your brilliance. I also really enjoy buying art, books, etc from people I feel connected with. 🧵

This. Labour are slashing and burning for no good reason, to enable their vile greedy lobbyists and corrupt vested interests. Horrifying stuff. This is our land, our country, they are supposed to protect it. The wildlife and green spaces are irreplaceable and valuable beyond anything money can buy.
This is what many of us have been saying. Part 3 of the Planning & Infrastructure Bill is based on a myth: that we don't have enough homes because wildlife and green spaces are protected. It will solve nothing, and inflict terrible harm on our remaining ecosystems

I absolutely love this poet and this book in particular is exquisite. And she's from #Sheffield - it's amazing to me how many brilliant poets (and authors) live in this city. If you have poetry lovers on your Christmas/birthday present/any other kind of gift list, you can't do better.

My granddad was a miner in the General Strike. He voted Labour his whole life. I joined the Party as a working-class kid at 16. I held office as a Labour councillor. But I haven’t been a member for years. And this policy makes me ashamed that I was ever associated with the party. Iniquitous. Stupid

This 'support our Reform-esque fascist policies or end up with Reform' argument is madness. Support this abomination to avoid the same abomination? Why?

I have this, I love it. A slender, beautiful volume holding a stunning poetic journey. I keep going back and back to it. Local #Sheffield poet @petegreensolo.com whose writing flows with truth (and deserves to be known everywhere). Wonderful.

But then all the Longbarrow books are gorgeous...

Wes Streeting has received £225k from private healthcare donors in the past year and I just don't think my morals could be bought for the price of half a London flat. I don't know if I have a number that would make me sell my country's health service down the river but Wes and I are different.

Exactly this. It takes time to get to know your people. The more you trust them the more they'll trust you, and the more confidently they'll reveal themselves.
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 111:
Treat the process of creating a character like that of getting to know a friend. Let them talk. See what you find out. Don't expect to know them fully the first time you meet them on the page. Tease out their past, their secrets. Allow them to surprise you.

"Write what you know" is limiting advice, which leads to limited writing. Instead, know what you're writing about. That means due diligence: good research, wide reading, specialist help and advice if you need it. Stay curious. Try new ideas. No limits.
