This fusion of wildfires + soil erosion modeling has needed for awhile. Good to have this published.

My humble opinion is that the finding that Africa has most post-fire runoff needs to be investigated more. Fire across Africa is a complex mosaic, w/ 100 m land cover maps too coarse to show that.

Maps in Mercator projection are lying to you - about size.

Greenland is not as big as the continent of Africa.

Greenland could nicely fit Denmark & the other Nordics.

Greenland could cover Québec, the Maritimes, & parts of Nunavut.

Or approx. 1.2 Alaskas.

Just resurfacing this ✨for no particular reason✨.
My long held opinion is that the Norwegians should stop handing out peace prizes.

Like, they are damn near batting a 1000 for awarding it to folks who have or want to start military conflicts.

A sneak peak would be like a surprise mountain range.

Which honestly I would like to see.
We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps:

- It’s ‘voilà,’ not ‘wallah!’
- It’s ‘a lot,’ not ‘alot.’
- It’s ‘further ado,’ not ‘farther adieu.’
- It’s ‘flesh out,’ not ‘flush out.’
- It’s ‘sneak peek,’ not ‘sneak peak.’

No worries if not!!!

suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

I’ve noticed a lot of folks in STEM using generative AI to write papers. I don’t care what electric sheep dream of & I won’t be reading what they can write either. So I scan the LinkedIn posts, find the data citations. If data seems useful, I cite the data, not the paper. I’m not wasting *my* time.
I’m really concerned about early career scientists using generative AI in writing, because writing is how we think and reflect. There’s almost nothing *more* human than that, and to give that gift away to a machine is almost unconscionable to me

A bit more advice: be the mentor you wish you’d had, walk the walk (not just talk the talk), ethics is what you do when no one is watching, the awards and pubs are nice but the bright smiles and invites to coffee at conferences are better, have a life outside of work, work is not your family.
Advice for young professionals: Be flexible, be willing to learn, be willing to take risks (even if you fail).

The 2017 Tubbs Fire changed our understanding of how wildfires could impact water systems. Now, due largely to the LA fires, we’re building an understanding of what can realistically be done. Was an honor to talk with a fire chief ahead of his time for a concrete example ucanr.edu/blog/conflue...

New accepted paper in Environmental Research Letters on the extent of drought determines daily area burned (DAB) in Canadian forests. This study found a strong relationship
