A difficult topic but thankful to the team @truthout.org and to my dear friend and collaborator @mariannedhe.bsky.social for suggesting me as a possible person to write this.

Love to see my friends and dearest colleagues in this industry get their flowers!
Today, @motherjones.com got a donation from me specifically because the work of reporter @juliametraux.bsky.social.

Disability coverage by disabled folks is crucial.

Each donation (admittedly small though it is) has come after another piece covered by Julia Métraux.

I was a sustainer before @juliametraux.bsky.social but I’d become one again in a heartbeat for her. Do you know how rare it is to have a full time disability beat reporter? Julia and @slooterman.bsky.social (sustainer of her newsroom, too) are warriors.

Been loving doing more editing and Marianne's on a short list of people who make that task damn near simple.
If you're reading this and wondering how I manage to publish mostly typo-free stories every week in the newsletter, that's thanks to editor extraordinaire, John Loeppky (@jloeppky.com).

No amount of Olivia Nuzzi coverage, and there's a lot of it, can make me care about her actions or our industry's reaction to said actions.

I'd rather just put that energy into making good work, frankly.

Oh look, I'm doing something today. And, spoiler alert, it shouts out @devinheroux.bsky.social (and not just because we've both worked for CBC.)
Join us on Wednesday, November 19th at 6:00PM ET for the next session in the Disability Narrative Webinar Series! Journalist and disability advocate John Loeppky will enlighten us on the topic of Leveling the Field: Coverage of Parasport. RSVP today! ⤵️

In a world where, as disabled folks we fight so damn hard, a group I'm a part of in the journalism industry had a huge win this week.

I'm going to savour this feeling for a while.

I have a soft spot in my heart for fellow freelance journalists who can write about incredibly difficult topics in a way that is intertwined with creative analysis. @justinling.ca is doing just that for TorStar right now.

In 11 days I have had over 600 emails. I am in the midst of my busiest time of year. Sometimes it is tough being an inbox zero person when you fail at being so.

Niko's absolutely right here.

I also feel like there's this tendency to compare ourselves with Americans without talking to many Americans in any real depth. One of the greatest personal benefits of being a freelancer in the way that I am is to be friends with so many Americans.

As a freelancer, the most important person to have contact information for is your editor.

The second most important is whoever oversees accounts payable.

Ask me how I know.

I just saw the phrase "scoop-driven reporting" and I'd like it very much if this phrase was never written or uttered again in my lifetime.
