Something special to share. I’ve been up to my old tricks again – scanning, restoring, and researching a collection of over 600 Edwardian-era glass slides that were found in an attic.

I've connected them to Birmingham schoolmaster and amateur photographer Charles Francis Hayward.

Now that the Sept and Oct data are (belatedly) in, it looks like 2025 will be the second warmest year in the record (~80% probability). The last three years are in a class of their own.

A giant tsunamigenic rock avalanche (1 km²) that traveled ~16 km (partly onto ice) has just been dated to 10.9 ka in south Greenland! 😲
Impressive case and paper! 👏

Contemporary to the one we just dated in Ecrins massif! ⏱️

Such events are expected to be more frequent due to climate change! 🔥

I don't often try to discover new music. I have the classic & prog rock I was brought up on, the rock & pop I grew up with, the power & symphonic metal I found.

This year, I've tried out two new bands. This I highly recommend - a beautiful blend of metal & Brazilian music:

#Melissa has made landfall in #Jamaica, and has preliminarily tied the record for the lowest pressure of any landfalling hurricane in Atlantic history: 892 mb. That was last observed 90 years ago with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane.
The storm does not look like it even notices Jamaica being there.

Absoluteley stunning, mesmerizing...I have no words. Cannot imagine that I have ever seen such a symmetric Atlantic hurricane. Center pressure 892 hPa. It is really terrible that #Melissa is making landfall with such a strength! Image from tropical tidbits.

Western Türkiye was struck by a M6 earthquake today: a triggered event, in a larger sequence that started in August with a M6.1. Both events were damaging, and the sequence raises questions about earthquake triggering, and what to expect.
