There has been a rush among centrists like Gavin Newsom and Ezra Klein to brush over the hateful life of Charlie Kirk and valorize the man.

Let me be clear, killing Charlie Kirk was wrong and abhorrent.

We must condemn murder without sanitizing a man who built his empire on hate.

My latest piece.
We Must Not Posthumously Sanitize Charlie Kirk's Hateful Life
Influential anti-LGBTQ+ activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday. While condemning violence is something most can get behind, sanitization of his hate has gone too far.

It is extremely important right now to demonstrate that people who believe in American democracy are not so easily cowed.

Surfliner to LA closed for 6 weeks again for emergency bluff repairs. BUILD THE TUNNELS. DOUBLE TRACK EVERYWHERE. SUCK IT DEL MAR.
The Pacific Surfliner - America's 2nd most ridden rail corridor - will shutdown for 6 weeks between Irvine and Oceanside starting Monday to reinforce the line. These repairs are important, but giving 3 days notice is unacceptable for a non-emergency shutdown. www.pacificsurfliner.com/plan-your-tr...

Making effective bikeways is actually really cheap. Doing it the expensive way is for car convenience only. I'm grateful for the Meade Avenue roundabouts, but it would have been much cheaper (maybe 90% cheaper) and much more effective to do modal filters.

Guest Opinion: Modal filters are cheaper and work better than speed bumps
It’s time for PBOT to stop spending more for less.

My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author’s clear intent is pretty shitty.

Parenthood will really sort your priorities for you. And put a future for your children at the top of that list.
Not to get all "parenthood changes your whole perspective," but I do think becoming a dad has made me even less tolerant of Bluesky's doomer brigade. I'm completely uninterested in having depressive strangers lecture me about how my daughter's future is written and there's nothing we can do.

There's a lot in California that feels not left, not right, just pro regulation.
A lot of people on this website seem to think that housing regulation is just a dial you turn up or down, and anything that turns down the regulation dial is inherently conservative and therefore bad.

I really want an electric car that has no touch screens and does not connect to the Internet. But the car doesn't seem to exist.

Hey look, it works
In our 7x7 mile city, SF now has 75 miles of transit-only lanes. Result:
- Buses up to 35% faster
- 50% reduction in injury collisions on transit corridors
- Highest public approval rating since 2001
- Over 10 lines exceeding pre-COVID ridership

Does anyone have a starter pack for a broad variety of people with lots of knowledge about specific niche interests? I'm thinking people @dieworkwear.bsky.social but for like . . . cartography and surrealism and boat building or something.

Showing up every 4 years and asking for your vote is not an effective way to build public trust and involvement, and most people (reasonably) don't want to dedicate endless hours to dry meetings. Building a coalition means offering a real opportunity to connect.
Here’s my pitch: the Democrats should take a few million dollars and fund free childcare centers and bowling nights in swing districts resnikoff.beehiiv.com/p/the-party-...

I mostly post about urbanism and politics, but I'm also involved with Glass House Arts, which is about the coolest group of artists I could hope to know (based in Escondido!). Check em out.
We highly recommend building stuff with your friends.

I don't think that a cabinet full of TV personalities is a winning strategy. There has to be a lot of conflict with that many egos in the room.
