OpenAI isn’t just an experiment in AI; it’s a grand experiment with opaque financial engineering.

What’s great about independent bookstores: 3 years ago I got emailed a gift certificate. My youngest was 2 months old at the time, so I was tired and groggy and the email got buried. The bookstore just called the sender and reminded them to check with me that I got it.

It’s a lovely winter day here in Vermont. Crisp air, snow on the ground, wood stove fired up.

Okay I’m ready for spring now.

I got on bksy and one of the first things I thought to post was an actual photo. Not a meme or a snark or some (attempted) pithy comment. I hadn’t done that since the earliest days of Twitter. It felt good!
BlueSky has just got me thinking about so many social media habits that I never really questioned on Twitter because, well, that's just the internet.

In fact, it doesn't have to be. We don't all have to be snarky, disingenuous, bad-faith, better-than-thee assholes.

Nor do we have to accept it.

My twitter account has been closed and locked since November 2022, but I had left the posts up until now.

I just deleted the entire thing in 15 minutes, thanks to a great script from Luca Hammer:

I almost forgot rss existed. Now seems like the right time to get back to an un-algorithmic-icized information diet.
For anyone looking to adjust their media diet, now’s a great time to consider escaping The Algorithms with RSS. Here are some of the blogs, newsletters, and independent news sites I follow: www.mollywhite.net/blogroll/

For feed readers,  I use Inoreader, but there are many other good options.

I think the big sea change this time around is that the Democrats essentially ceded the economic argument to conservatives and let the more liberal control of the culture continually move the Overton window (very cautiously) left.
Even as we enter the post neoliberal age, the irony is that "price stability uber-alles" was basically the foundational neoliberal principle.

It’s going to come out that Open AI is just 20 really fast typists in a trenchcoat.
