Why bother?

If you don’t care about your research, why do it?
AI ‘could replace humans’ in some social science surveys.

Metascientist says AI responses are similar enough to humans and could offer productivity gains.

I’ve been toying with the idea of subscribing to kagi, although their AI is a turnoff, but this ability might just nudge me to give it a try.
My New Year’s resolution is that if you pop up a modal of any kind when I visit your site I will simply close the tab. Or if I’m feeling generous, hit the back button and down rank you in #Kagi.

I'm going to really try to bring back my blog this month.
Time to bring back blogs on Wordpress and/or Blogspot!

Everyone (who likes cats) needs to see this today.
I bought a ball pit for the cats and filled it with their toys and some homegrown catnip.

Success!

The fun thing about AI slop: I have a data cleanup project that would be ideal to turn over to GenAI, except I can't and if accuracy didn't matter, I wouldn't clean it up at all. Also, GenAi doesn't do that. It only wants to find the most banal way to complete my sentences. Thanks Slopya.

Introduce yourself with what almost killed you.

Hi, I'm pneumonia.

(And childbirth would have killed me if I had not been in an excellent hospital with an excellent OB)

Funny how the question "how will we pay for this?" is never applied to the military or to starting a new war.

If it helps people, we have to justify the expense. If it causes pain and destruction, it's all fine.

One of the guys trying to force us to extrude slop at work wants us to stop using the word slop. Lol no.

The only reason I still go to $bucks (when traveling) is that they are the only chain that reliably has soy milk. They seem to have replaced their tasty soy milk with some nasty, flavorless stuff. I’ve been wanting to give up S$ permanently and this will do it.

I miss having a Lhasa Apso in my life. We have some work to do before bringing in new animals, but once the new floor is in and the house is dog- and kitten-proofed again, I'll be scouring the shelters! (Also willing to accept a chihuahua or, really, any small dog who needs a home.)

Thanks for sharing this document, @rweingarten.bsky.social.

I read it, and I believe it's inexcusably inadequate and will not prepare teachers or schools to confront the very real dangers of the "A.i." products pushed by your partners, including OpenAI.

A few thoughts for your consideration...

If anyone has extra time on this holiday weekend, here's a talk where I take folks through this history (of rumor-spreading during crisis events) and connect it to how our information systems, politics, and (increasingly) values have been rewired, reconfigured, and turned on their heads.

I teach First-Year Writing at the university level and I would make this book required reading for my class. Students KNOW their attention is being manipulated, but constant stress and overwhelm compels them to stick with what feels familiar, and every book on this vital subject is outdated now.
Also: I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Publishing, let me write a media literacy book, I am begging you. I keep being told that there's no appetite for this...

But how can there NOT be, when it's an urgent and pressing issue, especially with how we aggregate news + use of AI?

I need this both for me and for my work. I’m good for at least two copies.
