Trump's administration realizes that midterms are coming and changes course 180 degrees to fall in line with what voters actually think in 9..8..7..

I cannot tell you how absolutely infuriatingly this stuff comes across to Europeans.

When we say America is no longer a reliable ally, it goes considerably deeper than Donald Trump himself. This kind of complacent, condescending shit is a *huge* part of it.

Shia militias from Iraq are pouring into Iran in support of the Islamist regime. Together with Basij militia and the IRGC they are striking down the popular uprising of the Iranian people against the Islamic state. This is supported by mercenaries from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

For many years I have been reminding my countryman:

1. All Americans consider Vietnam *their* tragedy and don't see the at least 2 million South Vietnamese exterminated by the communists as the main result of their betrayal. Peace, Love, Fuck at a concert, oh aren't we "progressive".

It's almost like fabricating criminal charges against the Fed Reserve Chair is not inspiring investor confidence 🫠 who knew 🤷‍♂️

PS: The original article title "geopolitical uncertainty" well of course! THAT'S the reason 🤣

So, I've been working only from the office for 3 months, for the first time since about 2021. Switched back to remote this week, let me share some observations.

The use of the word "needlessly" in the title is absolutely peak Westsplaining by The Economist. Even if you oppose the policies, to call them needless when Ru weaponizes and propagandizes Ru-speakers to justify its aggression against its neighbours is clueless privilege, not an analytical position.

Love it! 💖 When in crisis - reach across the aisle.
After holding their first meeting in months, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and opposition-aligned President Karol Nawrocki have agreed to put aside their differences in other areas in order to pursue a common line on security, including a potential peace deal in Ukraine.

History teaches us: when in crisis - pivot to the center. Pivoting to your radical "allies" is signing your death sentence, sometimes literally. Didn't work out for the National People’s Party on the right, didn't work for the Left SRs.

For the last time: WHY. ARE. YOU. MAKING. A. BIG. DEAL OF. THIS? So Trump pardoned one cartel boss/American politician and now will put another one behind bars, for the next populist-left Yankee POTUS to pardon. So fucking what?

Stop freaking out about nothing: you are crying wolf.
Well uhm, yes? Did this slop fool anyone? He looks 10 years too young, why is he in a blazer and not in a sweat suit, they all look a bit unreal engine plasticy and yet somehow 1993 at the same time.

Actually 🧐 something awesome just happened.

The last high ranking international official Maduro spoke with was from.. China. A couple of hours before he spoke with Delta.

Meaning - Southern and Central America will think twice before pivoting to the CCP.

The ones you officially don't recognize as heads of state - yes.
We can just kidnap heads of state now.

Honestly: this isn't unprecedented or all that impactful. Even on an economic level - I am not an oil and gas expert, but I doubt that restarting an industry that has been dead since Chavez was alive can take less than 5 years, if you start today.

Mäh. If anything, this chaos is a short term deterrent.

Redlining in Syria, gifting reset buttons while bankrolling industry and infrastructure modernization is what consistently asks for a repeat of 1930s.

CCP does not need an excuse. ruskies do not either, but got theirs in Kosovo.
International law may not stop Russia and China, but US actions in Venezuela will still likely backfire by giving them an easy excuse for future aggression.

Despite Maduro being a horrible dictator, there is no legitimacy to what the US is doing.

It is pure imperialism

I don't think that plans have been made at all 😁 which can be a good thing. Remember - his philosophy here is much closer to Bush Senior, than W. There will be no "nation building" or whatever the second Iraq War was about.
On the question regarding opposition leader María Corina Machado Trump responded:

„I think it would be tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support or the respect within the country.“

What a slap for Machado. It appears that different plans have been made.

Also interesting aside:

1. When you are not supported by your people, no amount of mercenary secret police assholes will protect you.
2. Countries under brutal dictatorships are generally weak when it comes to resisting invasions, unless the invaders overstay their welcome.
Quick reminders:

1. Maduro de jure, has not been recognized by democratic nations as a legitimate leader for a while now. He is actually both less legitimate and responsible for more protestor deaths than Lukashenko
2. He did annex oil rich territory
3. Nothing about this is unprecedented

Kudos to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for keeping himself together after Trump‘s statement that „Russia wants Ukraine to succeed“. I would have bursted out laughing. But his facial expressions are priceless.

UA can expect very little from the Trump/Ze meeting if Trump considers his phone call with Putin "very productive" Putin will have restated his non-negotiable terms once again, and once again Trump will try and force it on UA which will be unacceptable to UA and Europe as a whole.

There is an audio interview of him from 1991 detailing his beliefs. There are credible accounts of his former boss and mentor Sobchak talking Ivan the Terrible level "geopolitics". There is ample evidence including their pop culture, that these views are mainstream in post Soviet ru.
The US declassified exchanges between US President Bush and Putin from 2008 in which Putin already called Ukraine an „artificial“ state, clearly denying its right for existence.
