The FAA has just issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive for MD-11 aircraft requiring aircraft inspections and any applicable corrective actions before further flight.

AD #: 2025-23-51
Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2025-23-51 is sent to owners and operators of The Boeing Company Model MD-11 and MD-11F airplanes.

Background

This emergency AD was prompted by an accident where the left-hand engine and pylon
detached from the airplane during takeoff. The cause of the detachment is currently under
investigation. This condition could result in loss of continued safe flight and landing.

FAA’s Determination

The FAA is issuing this AD because the agency has determined the unsafe condition is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design.

AD Requirements

This AD prohibits further flight until the airplane is inspected and all applicable corrective actions are performed using a method approved by the Manager, AIR-520, Continued Operational Safety Branch, FAA.

CONFIRMED: FedEx follows UPS in grounding MD-11 fleet after Boeing safety recommendation. Western Global expected to follow. Boeing statement expected shortly. (Via ⁦‪@theaircurrent‬⁩.com)

After a Friday Boeing recommendation to ground the MD-11 freighter fleet, FedEx has followed UPS in immediately ceasing operations of the aging tri-jet. In a statement provided to TAC, the logistics provider said, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to immediately ground our MD-11 fleet as we conduct a thorough safety review based on the recommendation of the manufacturer.”

A statement from Boeing on its recommendation is expected shortly. The airline has 28 MD-11s in operation. UPS Airlines, FedEx and Western Global are the only remaining operators of the McDonnell Douglas type. UPS grounded its fleet of 26 aircraft earlier Friday night.

US airlines have cancelled 3% of flights today, Friday, Nov. 7, in response to the FAA flight reduction mandate, per Cirium.

This is only the 72nd worst day for flight cancellations in the US since January 2024 — or as I’m told, akin to a bad winter storm.
