A while ago I gave a talk on "Doing research with Australian population-level administrative data" (specifically, PLIDA).

The talk contained tips and tricks that may prove useful to both beginners and experts, and so I am sharing the slides here:

AI-generated cake
Everyone please enjoy this nerdy data layer cake that @jankabatek.com made for morning tea 🤣 It includes ingredients such as “honey for smoothness & to symbolise policy impact” & blueberries as data points #econsky

I've been working on a new tool, Refine, to make scholars more productive. If you're interested in being among the very first to try the beta, please read on.

Refine leverages the best current AI models to draw your attention to potential errors and clarity issues in research paper drafts.

September 2025 was the third warmest on record in the Berkeley Earth dataset. But this downplays how anomalous it was; without 2023 and 2024 this year would have been well above any prior records and well above the long-term trend:

It’s always notable how the far-right uses “censorship” as a way to say “people publicly contradicted our horrible views and we don’t like that”

I've been on plenty of flights that were delayed because of late passengers.

Waiting for a late captain, though... That's a new one.

It's mid-October & ARC haven't updated us since mid-July on the Brand New Grants System.

When will we be told?

What schemes will even run?

ARC "paused" (cancelled?) the only Indigenous scheme, plus Laureates & all Industry Fellowships, and so far there's no replacements.

ARC? Anyone?

On one hand: don't anthropomorphize AI. On the other: LLMs exhibit signs of gambling addiction.

The more autonomy they were given, the more risks the LLMs took. They exhibit gambler's fallacy, loss-chasing, illusion of control...

A cautionary note for using LLMs for investing without guardrails.

A really neat article on fertility:

On the topic of social media ban: I'm really curious how it'll play out.

My Slav reference frame had me initially thinking that this will be a completely ineffective political gesture, but based on conversations with teachers, the ban might give parents more agency in saying "no" to social media.

1) Working with AI boosts the performance of people solving math, science & ethics questions
2) The biggest boost is for the hardest problems
3) High performers remain highest performing, but low performers gain more
4) People who are good with AI gain most
