Looking at that map and how it makes it appear that anti-Black elements like sundown (or sunset) towns stop at the Canadian border, I thought it would be useful to mention they existed up here as well, as did segregated schools, etc..

Ehh, we can get back to a new level of normalcy, but it’s gonna be one that recognizes the foundational elements of white supremacy infesting our political systems and what kind of vigilance we all need to hold to prevent it from rising again in our lifetimes
I have been tired of living in interesting times since the fall of 2015.

And we will never have any level of normalcy again, because Pres. Tangerine Kidraper and his cronies are ruining it for the whole world.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

This warms my heart.
Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

Why does the internet feel so lonely? In my latest column for @newscientist.com, I explore how a 1950s sociology classic, "The Lonely Crowd," sheds light on what's happening today online. (You can read it with a free account.) www.newscientist.com/article/mg26...
The internet feels super lonely right now. Here's why
Almost 80 years ago, sociologists identified a new personality type that is particularly sensitive to loneliness. It's even more relevant today, says Annalee Newitz

Just a reminder that you don't *have* to read the Epstein Files. Especially those of you who have experienced abuse in your past. I learned my lesson after volunteering for the NCMEC Image Lab during the NCAC Symposium on Child Abuse.

@charlotteclymer.bsky.social's guide is good enough.
This an excellent primer on this grotesque mess.
Heed her warning at the end about the emails. I read something by Peter Attia yesterday so repellent my body physically recoiled and I couldn't finish the article.
These men are all monsters.
"You are not alone in looking at this mountain of rancid shit and wondering where to start and what you should know as you go along. So, I’m starting this guide, which is intended to be just as helpful to myself in understanding all of it."

Drinking good non-alcoholic red wine while watching the “Wine and Roses” episode of Schitt’s Creek is not the same as drinking fully alcoholic wine.

Yeah, it tastes damn close but when in mourning mode, I’d really prefer not to feel everything right now. (1/2)

Why does the passing of Catherine O’Hara make me sad when other celebrity deaths don’t?

For decades, I’ve said Catherine O’Hara was my ideal mom. Her characters were often flawed but still lovable. Her eyes always held a warm smile and you just knew she’d accept you just as you are. (1/2)

For any elected official who needs to hear this, I impart a lesson learned from the NFL:

When the other team is tired and on the back foot, you don’t call a timeout so they can catch their breath. You grind their fucking face into the dirt until the final whistle blows and you’ve won the game.

Historically, mine was "Bodak Yellow" by Cardi B. More recently, "KFC Santería feat. Sudan Archives" by Cain Culto. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vRu...

and we need to know what we’re trying to protect, too

but we also need to have ambitious, audacious ideas of what “better” looks like, so we know what to move towards

Your safety plan doesn't need to be flawless today. Don't get in your head about doing 100% of your safety plan this second. Just focus on the most doable skill right now. Think doing 1% of your safety plan, then check in w/ yourself about another 1%.

Recovery is micro choices.
