I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

🎥 Is it just me, or did someone re-tool Lanthimos's lesser known, Greek language oddity ALPS as a feel-good dramedy starring Brendan Fraser? www.imdb.com/title/tt1414...

I wrote about public libraries as spaces of civic solidarity, common knowledge, and public infrastructure — all endangered by commercial and federal saboteurs
Extralibrary Loan: Making the Civic Infrastructure We Need
Amid a war on public knowledge, libraries are pushing outward, enlarging the commons through new configurations of civic and creative life.

If you like coming-of-age dramas, and have Netflix (in NZ, at least) I just spotted Sean Wang's excellent DIDI (弟弟). A verite dive into the messy life of a teen boy (of immigrant parents) struggling to fit in.

F**k the current NZ Government's weak-arse pandering to power/money in the face of ongoing illegal, awful, inhumane genocide. This is how the most evil shit in the history of the world manages to keep happening 🤬😓

Treasury laser focused on screwing over workers & making the cost of living crisis worse.

There are plenty of other options (eg tax wealth, tax tobacco, remove tax breaks for landlords, increase overall tax rate for higher incomes...) but no, Treasury decides to come for working families instead 😕
Someone is going to have to pay to keep the country's finances in order, says Treasury, and since it obviously can't be landlords or tobacco companies or the wealthy, we're afraid it's going to have to be you.

"Like if Big Bird smoked Fraggle Rock." is a simile that needs to be put into wider circulation 🤓
67. The Giant Claw (dir. Fred F. Sears, 1957).

Look at her.

Look at this girl.

She looks like a chicken that lays meth eggs.

Like if Big Bird smoked Fraggle Rock.

Perfection. Simply perfection.

Jennifer Lawrence in WINTER'S BONE; Elizabeth Olsen in MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE; Hailee Steinfeld in TRUE GRIT; Ethan Hawker in DEAD POETS SOCIETY... &c. &c.
Fun topic: what’s the first time you remember seeing now famous actors? Like, I remember seeing Michael Fassbender in JONAH HEX and thinking “shit, this dude’s good.”
I first saw Karl Urban in the movie Ghost Ship at a filthy $1 theater.

I could’ve never anticipated how many times I’d be saying to myself “Hey, it’s the guy from Ghost Ship!” for the rest of my life.
