Today I saw a response to an NPR piece (about Maduro pleading not guilty) saying something like "if he was gonna do that, why did he even bother going to court" and I envy the world that person lives in.

A plane just flew low over Manhattan, and I thought that was super duper illegal since 2001.

Muchos sabéis que Trump no es santo de mi devoción, pero cuando hace algo bien hay que reconocerlo.

Así que cuando haga algo bien, ya lo reconoceré.

Someone in the basement of the Cuban ministry of defense, opening a folder that says "Mar-a-Lago" on the front.

"What was your biggest impact on the Internet?"

I wrote the JS code for Google+'s social widgets. At one point, "I" was on every Google property (including search) and on every webpage on the Internet that included a +1 button, an "add me to your circles" widget, etc.

So not a very lasting impact.
"what was your biggest impact on the internet?"

no contest, it's:

I love it when they combine "use it now or get left behind" with "oh you tried it six months ago and it didn't work for you? You should try again, it's completely different now"
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively

Or, as I often say, it's 2025 and we are using Unix (1970) or Windows NT (1990) to access the web (1990) and run a server-side rendered web app (1960) or a client-side rendered AJAX app (1964).
Maybe this will make it clearer:

We went from horse and buggy to interplanetary rockets with less money, time, and human labour than we did as an industry moving from spreadsheets in a TUI to spreadsheets in a GUI

That should be fucking shameful as an industry. wtf is going on??

I hope he makes a full and quick recovery and then never has to pay for drinks or food ever again.
The man who tackled one of the Bondi Beach shooters is a Muslim fruit store owner named Ahmed Al Ahmed. He risked his life to end the attack on Jews celebrating Hanukkah on the beach. May the Most High protect and heal him and bless him abundantly for his righteousness.

Has anyone ever made an Earth sandwich where both pieces of bread came from the same loaf?
Is anyone here from Perth, Australia?

If you are, put a piece of bread on the ground.

If I do it here in Ottawa, we’ll make the entire Earth into a sandwich.

That’s gotta set a record.

We haven't done anything new with computers since the Internet became popular.

We all still use Unix and Windows. Someone who used either in 1995 could pick it right back up now.

Java, JavaScript, PHP, Ruby, Python are all older than C, Pascal, Scheme and SQL were when they were invented.

It's been twice already that my carefully crafted DSP function that uses arithmetic operations only turns out to be slower than the "naive" version that uses Math.sin and Math.cos and Math.atan up the wazoo.

That wasn't the case 13 years ago!

I was just thinking back to the 90s when magazines wrote about the Information Superhighway, we didn't know what to call the @ sign in Spanish, and Nicholas Negroponte kept writing the same essay about how airlines will know you need to go to your dad's funeral so they'll jack up the prices for you.

This is my "Big O is not a Big Deal" thread.

It is about algorithms. An algorithm consists of a sequence of steps that convert an input into an output.

Algorithms are theoretical: they are not programs, but recipes to build programs.

Me: The way algorithms are taught is wrong.

Them: Yeah! With so many irrelevant details like...

[In unison]

Me: ...that the word "algorithm" comes from Al-Khwarizmi

Them: ... big O notation

Me: What?

Them: What?

Me, generalist SWE, trying to build a PLL routine for my radio signal demodulator library, getting it consistently locked on frequency but mysteriously out of phase.

Any real DSP engineer, probably: "you got phase shift in your filter."

Me, three days later: "oops, I got phase shift in my filter."

For me, it's the fact that he built a whole fleet of space rockets and never went up to space, unlike Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos, who nearly had to be tied down so they wouldn't go in the prototypes.
