Data and digital services for the public sector. Use evidence to build tech that works. Currently Jarvus, formerly Ad Hoc, Fjord, and Sapient. Thoughts only mine. Don’t stop, never stop. Go birds.

#Transit systems in some major US #cities are in dire straits, due to long-term under-investment and recent increasing tendency to view transit thru a culture war lens, argues @humantransit.bsky.social

Should We Let Public Transit Die?
Urban-rural hostility is fueling a public transportation crisis in US cities. But demands to abandon bus and train riders ignore the economic and social costs of cutting service.

This a a quick reminder that beyond all the bullshit, on a fundamental level, public infrastructure is both necessary and beautiful. Behold this gorgeous bridge. Go fucking birds.

The IRS, USDS, and 18F teams were great—they did all the real work, while a bunch of us just worked to protect them. It was great work by everybody.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company.

It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create.

They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms.

I’m happy to invest and/or help

Really smart move here.
PA's Gov. Shapiro just signed an executive order directing agencies to prioritize the recruitment of federal employees, notably presenting all state positions in federal terms. Saying that an IT position is the equivalent of a GS-13 Supervisory IT Specialist is really helpful! pa.gov/content/dam/...

1 reason @wired.com is leading is b/c they have long understood that tech is the infrastructure of *everything* & as a result is *the* invisible lever of power.

Control the infrastructure & you control everything.

The entire policy establishment (gov, media, academia) is still catching up to this.
I've always liked WIRED. But I did not have on my 2025 notes - WIRED becomes THE source for the most important investigative journalism of our time (with respect for ProPublica and a few others)

SCOOP: Business leaders are paying as much as $5,000,000 to meet one-on-one with President Donald Trump at his Florida compound, sources tell WIRED, while others are paying $1,000,000 apiece to dine with him in a group setting.

I think it's freeing to know that I casually misunderstand a million things that I don't have specific domain knowledge about. I don't get why some people cling so hard to confident casual beliefs they hold about stuff they don't know that well. There's nothing wrong with updating your priors.

There is a grand tradition of technologists landing in government and not understanding how it works. That ignorance can be about policy and law, but also about the infrastructure of government tech, and how fragile it all is. @pahlkadot.bsky.social offers an example: www.eatingpolicy.com/p/jed
