The deadline is next week to add prospects to the 40-man roster, thus protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft.

Find out who @ivyfutures.bsky.social and I think they might protect!

Can we get a Friday, August 28th, 2026 Kyle Hendricks day at Wrigley Field?

The 28 is a nod to his number and the Cubs are scheduled to play the Reds, which is the team that Kyle faced in his MLB Debut and final start as a Cub.

The season didn’t end how you’d hope, but the Cubs fought this year. Battled injuries, won 92 wins and a playoff series, was down 0-2 and forced a Game 5, won 4/5 playoff games at Wrigley.
Now they head to the winter and the plan will be to build another winner to go further.

the fact that baseball media has to keep pushing a GFM for an Angels prospect's brain injury expenses says more about the Angels organization than anything I could possibly ever say myself

Cade Horton might have the perfect risk/reward projection for the Cubs and Horton/his agency to come together on an extension after this season.

Cubs lock in $54m and Horton earns lifetime security while still having opportunity to enter free agency at 30/31.

Happy MLB Draft Day to all those who celebrate.
I no longer scout it. I barely even know any names this year. I only watched some quick highlights on a half dozen players I've seen connected to Cubs.
So, I can't help you with any analysis this year.
Please turn to @ivyfutures.bsky.social for that.

Respectfully, I have watched Cade Horton since before he was drafted and I couldn’t disagree more
I have watched Cade Horton since he came up. In my opinion, he does not have major league starter pitching ability. Maybe he can develop it. But not now.
June 28, 2025 at 5:02 PM
I’d trust Craig Counsell on how he wants to develop Cade Horton. If it keeps looking like last night then of course that’s not viable for a team in contention, but one start where he couldn’t keep his team in the game against a premium opponent is a learning moment, not a referendum.

Not sure it’s the best fit positional, but Rob Refsnyder would be a great lefty masher if the Red Sox ended up selling. He’s hit lefties like Suzuki and Tucker over the last two years.

With @tommybirch.bsky.social confirming David Kaplan’s report it feels the appropriate time to talk about where Cade Horton started and where he is now.

I'll do my best to give solid insight.

Significant arms just haven't been moved early in the season recently. Looking at 2021-2024 transactions the earliest one was May 21, 2021
MIL: J.P. Feyereisen & Drew Rasmussen
TBR: Willy Adames and Trevor Richards.

Most "early deals done in late June.
lol - solid insight!
There's no indication Hoyer is working on actually fixing the bullpen. None. Drew Pomeranz is not what a well-run franchise does; not one thinking of contending for a pennant.
Show me some evidence that Hoyer is willing to overpay using all those bats he has. He isn't.
April 24, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Drew Pomeranz is an interesting flier. He has a 4.66 ERA in 9 ⅔ IP at AAA, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Gave up runs in 2 of first 4 outings and zero since. The knuckle curve (below) is sitting at a 50% whiff rate. Will FB continue to be useful with lower usage? Could he get a velo bump?

One of the first breakouts in the Cubs system I can definitely point to in 2025 is Grant Kipp, the 25 yr old out of Yale in his 4th pro season.

After two AA starts, Kipp’s numbers: 10 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 13 K. 34.3 CSW%.

SIX pitches, including top 3 slider in the system.
