I have a couple of people I was friends with from high school that are close friends now, but they're not the same people I was close friends with in high school.

TBH, I really liked IRC and gay dot com chat.
It was a group setting, mostly location based, and you could just socialize and let connections develop naturally.
Also, there was just about always somebody you knew who could vouch for (or warn you about) anybody you didn't know yet.

It's really discouraging how much of a cesspit of scammers grindr has become in the last couple of years. Easily 95% of the accounts that message me are just... not real people.
