Urbanist in Suburban Bay Area. Cat Dad. I like bikes. Take equal parts outage, cute animals, and puns, mix for 3 minutes and spread evenly over the course of the day. Opinions my own, not my employer's.

Antitrust critics of Abundance claim homebuilding oligopolies are holding back supply and driving up prices, esp in Texas.

I did something really simple. I called up their sources.

Everyone I spoke to told me the same thing: Their claims are bullshit.

The Anti-Abundance Critique on Housing Is Dead Wrong
Antitrust critics say that homebuilding monopolies are the real culprit of America’s housing woes. I looked into some of their claims. They don’t hold up.

I don't think people understand how bad the retail / service worker crisis is for small businesses in Silicon Valley due to housing costs.

Just an unbelievable own goal that the party—and specifically Pelosi, who had great strengths as Speaker—put an ancient and not nimble messenger in this key public committee spot instead of @Aoc who is absolutely one of the best comms people in entire party.
Asked what he recommends federal workers do, Gerry Connolly says: "I guess if you can, cover yourself and do the five things you did last week"

A million cars have disappeared: What NYC is like after one month of congestion pricing
Congestion pricing began on January 5. One month in, traffic is down, public buses are faster, and transit ridership is up.

I've never, to my knowledge, been blocked on Twitter, Threads, or Mastodon. My last two discussions on Bluesky have resulted in blocks after a purely factual skeet. I'd love to get off of Musk's hellacape but Bluesky really does have a tolerance problem.

this is incredible stuff. most state DOTs would spend tens of billions on highway expansions to try and see numbers like this (that wouldn’t even pan out anyway thanks to induced demand lol)
