Looking beyond the fact that I am seething with rage, this is the time to nurture and develop community-based dual language / heritage language education programs. Resist erasure and forced assimilation. Maintain and grow your heritage language(s), and support the growth of others.
Getting informal reports that as part of the mass layoffs at the Department of Education, the International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) Office has been "abolished."

IFLE administers Title VI and Fulbright-Hays grant and fellowship programs.

A disaster.

Damn, did I need this. NGL about how deflated, disconnected, and lost in the sauce all of everything has made me feel lately.
Anyway, reposting since maybe others will benefit from it as much as I did. 💜
I'll share what I conveyed to a grad student recently:

There is much that remains unknown and out of our control right now. The future is extremely uncertain. Multiple job markets have already imploded. Focus on what you can control. Can you finish the dissertation? Then finish the dissertation.

“McMahon, the education secretary, described the layoffs as part of an effort to deliver services more efficiently and said the changes would not affect student loans, Pell Grants, funding for special needs students or competitive grant making.”

With 50% of the staff dismissed?! Like hell it won’t!

This is abhorrent. Columbia University and all other universities with a mentality similar to it should be embarrassed and ashamed of how it is failing to keep its students, faculty, and staff safe.

I will be fine

I worry about the young scholars whose work is being knee-capped
Institute of Education Sciences was a George W Bush innovation

Republicans made it happen, as part of NCLB

Education Sciences Act of 2002

Idea was to provide a research base for its accountability: here are scientifically-tested methods than can improve education
Hearing that DOGE went into the Dept of Education today and shut down almost the entirety of the department's in-house research arm, Institute of Educational Sciences, cancelling contracts totally about $900m.

If you’re not really understanding why you should be thoroughly horrified and terrified about
McMahon’s appointment as Sec of Ed, this article really does a great job at providing context. I 100% expect to see a rise in garbage behavior as well as protections to excuse it once she takes charge.

Them: Get a degree so you can get a job.
Also them: How can we make college almost completely inaccessible?
It's already near-impossible for many to afford undergrad, and many work multiple jobs to survive grad school (I was in a STEM program and could only live comfortably by working part-time at a winery!). This would make universities spaces solely for the wealthy. This cannot pass. #AcademicSky ⚗️
Tucked into a long list of programs and tax breaks that Republican lawmakers are considering cutting, to help pay for extending tax cuts that largely benefit wealthier families is a proposal to make scholarships and grants fully taxable.

I have a feeling that the next several months are going to be major for me within my doctoral student journey. Is there a word for being both excited and yet nervous about what’s to come without implying a negative feeling? Maybe aufgeregt sein? I’m gonna go with that. Ich bin aufgeregt!

“The American education system is ‘radically decentralized’. Local schools and even individual teachers are often left to work independently, choosing their own curriculum materials and writing their own lesson plans — a structure that could restrain Trump in his second term.”

Let’s hope it does.
What's true: There are dozens of new state laws attempting to control the curriculum. Trump has said he will bring this approach to the federal level. What's also true: Social studies teachers are often able to ignore, soft-pedal or even subvert these limitations: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/20/u...
