the UK is (not just the originator but) the setting for some of the most popular culture in the world. there is a whole genre of videogames that are set in an imagined Britain. 'soft' power is real economic and even political power.

Agree. One thing that I really liked about @jpspencer.bsky.social’s Labour Together report is it included culture in “growth spending”. So much policy about regional development in the UK basically regards culture, tourism, etc. as distractions from the real work of building trains to nowhere.

Cutting "red tape" (aka public protections), as Reeves is doing, does not save money. Instead, it transfers costs from the rich to the poor. Other people pay for financial recklessness, filthy rivers, air pollution, lax building standards and consumer rip-offs.

I'm starting to get bothered by narratives getting categorized as "grief horror." It creates the appearance of a trend, with all the attendant backlash, when grief is really just an integral part of the horror genre.

last night I dreamed that there was a big national scandal where it turned out Edward VII was illigitimate and overnight they kicked Charles out and replaced him with a builder called Larry who was the real true king and his first act was to introduce "UBI to everyone, no backsies or it's the chop"
