Any man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

I was raised on stories about people who were courageous enough to make the ultimate sacrifice in different historical eras, and have always wondered if I would have such courage. Finding out about Alex Pretti's small acts of courage (telling off coworkers for sexist jokes) and dedication ...

This man died to protect a woman from government thugs. The self-professed “noblest way to go” of many a reactionary, done in the cause of universal brotherhood and anti-racism. They will claim anything and everything else happened, for they are shamed and humiliated by his courage.
A VA nurse who dedicated his life to helping others, murdered by a man who has dedicated his life to hurting others.

This is courage. Looking a masked, government fascist dead in the eye, face to face, knowing full well that your life is on the line.

If elected officials had 1/10th of Alex Pretti's resolve, we would have far fewer troubles.

the Sodom and Gomorrah parallels are starting to get a little heavy-handed
Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump — 3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.

We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

Chicago is down from its peak population by more than a million people, yet we also have some of the fastest growing housing costs in the nation.

How do we fix this? Build. More. Housing.

Good morning! It is January 17th in the United Socialist States of America.

Today we commemorate Religious Freedom Day. Worship as you will, or not at all!

We celebrate Nevius’ stonecrop, sedum nevii.

Muhammad Ali was born on this day in 1942; Barbara Jordan died today in 1996.

states should be reduced in size to just their urbanized areas, and the remainder of their land area should be converted into a territorial possession of the remaining state for the urban residents to administer as they see fit

As the tournament starts soon, do you know where the "Futari wa princess - Max Heart Tournament" name comes from ?

It is a reference to "Futari wa Precure: Max Heart", a 2005 Magical Girl anime.

I went ahead and generated this data for every year in the entire history of women's wrestling according to cagematch.net, so if you're interested in looking at the entire international network of women's wrestling for 1940, you can.

looking at the graph visualization of the joshi wrestling scene in 2012, and convinced myself there was a bug in my code, but no, turns out there was an Ice Ribbon wrestler named "235" at the time.

one of the things that upsets me every time I run into it but that I don't really have a word for is the mindset that views laws and rules not as embodying any underlying principles, but just as obstacles to doing what you want.

I often think back to the class i took from a grad student named Cassandra whose theories on gender and race were not only quite predictive, but also explained why no one in power would listen to them
Yep, I've got a History degree and the lessons from it are far less predictive of what will happen in contemporary society than Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory, which are like that sports almanac in Back to the Future II.
kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life
