My neighborhood
Here's what ICE is up to in Northeast Minneapolis today. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Warning: video is hard to watch

Interestingly the active of παρακαλέω, which in the passive gets rendered "comforted/consoled", can mean to call friends in to witness in a trial

A component of what's happening now is that the people of Minnesota found a high-profile, highly effective way to resist the Trump administration's policies—to thwart them, rather than just protesting against them.

I fricken love my neighbors. We are troubled on every side. Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed

Any man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

Also saw Sufjan’s Illinoise tour at the Pabst. God bless Milwaukee
It’s 2013. On Jan 1 my wife moves out of our house. In April I take 2 days for myself, rent a room at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Milwaukee, & watch Grizzly Bear play the Pabst Theatre. I felt alive for the first time in a year, and that I could still experience joy or ecstasy

Tell me your great three album runs
You ever think about how Arcade Fire made three extremely good albums in a row and then fell of a musical cliff?

Probably the best shepherd’s pie I’ve ever made
what are people stress eating?

I’ve seen the beliefs and practices of Evangelicals first hand that led them to this place, and their soft contempt for their literal neighbors goes back a long way. It’s a lifetime of formation

🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

Work from home has definitely helped us in our neighborhood resistance groups. It even keeps a balance because then I can go out for patrols in the evening

I often forget I had this short-lived blog, mostly for Greek stuff, a number of years ago. If you wanted to be distracted from the state of things, you could read about why I don't use Robert Fagles' translations amerelayman.wordpress.com/2017/03/21/o...
On Why Not Robert Fagles
Robert Fagles knows Greek and Latin better than I ever will. And he’s put in countless hours translating many of the great Classical texts. His translations are used in most classes I took an…

This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

One day in itself won't transform anything overnight. But this is a practice round, building the social infrastructure to do bigger ones
No work, No school, No shopping — only community, conscience, and collective action.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Mark your calendar. Make your plan. Encourage community to stand with you + Join the Twin Cities DSA contingency for the march!

It really is what Holly said. Not used to the NYT being so honest
The best - the most realistic - national coverage I’ve read.

“Minnesota is under siege.… [“Operation Metro Surge”] is an occupation designed to punish and terrorize anyone who dares defy this incursion and, by extension, Donald Trump’s power to wield limitless force against any enemy he wishes.”
I went to Minneapolis last week. What I saw was horrifying and inspiring in equal measure. Gift link to my latest column: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/o...

Minneapolis and Saint Paul have basically mobilized into a war economy of mutual aid and non-violent defense. I’ve never seen anything like it, even during Covid. People who barely vote are guarding their schools from ICE and doing the shopping for neighbors in hiding.
This is so smart. I’m so impressed with all the different ways you’re helping your neighbors.

This is Minneapolis:

I have been to two churches this weekend (for mutual aid work).

I am an atheist and cannot remember the last time I went to a church (except funerals).

Minneapolis religious leaders and communities are stepping up with supporting our neighbors.

Couple random finds digging through a box in the basement tonight. This very Selzer cd is the first ever cd I bought. It marks the transition from cassettes

And you can’t find Oakenfold on streaming!

Fixed it for you, @nytimes.com. 🫶

Beyond his trailblazing decision to use a bad word, Jacob Frey (and Tim Walz) have done nothing to stop ICE from terrorizing Twin Cities residents.

We keep us safe from ICE. Support TCDSA's resistance work and donate here: buff.ly/rnvJcLx
