From a good thread of caveats to another post.

This point about universities' "public" status seems worth unpicking, because after two years on a university court I think it's key to understanding how university management sees the world.
"Universities are not part of the public sector"

Only by a narrow definition of public sector which also excludes all other arms-length bodies where the majority of funding is explicitly controlled by government or Parliament. The SLC is government run and its loans government backstopped.

One of the less known aspects about the Easter Rising is that Indian students at UCD also took part & were then deported by the British authorities for it. Among those students was V.V. Giri who became president of India and said “when I am not an Indian, I am an Irishman”

This whole thread is full of truth. ECRs are the single-use plastic of the UKHE sector and no-one is doing a damn thing about it.
Being on the precarious carousal often involves being treated like disposal garbage in a variety of exciting ways.

Saying things like 'oh it's hard but we all have to go through it' doesn't engage with that or its effects and it can be really frustrating anf dismissive. 2/

“All I said was that the cliche-filled blandness and factual errors of an AI-generated essay were indistinguishable from the work of humanities scholars so I don’t understand why you’re being so rude.”
Even the mildest pushback against AI & stereotypes about the liberal arts these days seems to generate “you’re Luddites who lack critical thinking & civility” responses here from its STEM/business champions. There are tradeoffs in everything. We need to talk seriously about them. This isn’t it.

I know academics who use AI regularly, for work and play, and I'd really like them, and universities, to tell me how they contend with AI's bottomless appetites for power and water.

Is asking ChatGPT to interpret a Xmas song or making it write your syllabus worth this to you?

This is idiotic in many ways, but I’d like to remind us all that “competition” is a made up problem caused by removing the student numbers cap.

If you can understand why a primary school needs to control student numbers you understand why universities do too
This is a really, really bad thing to say out loud.

Rebuses ftw! (Several fun medieval rebuses below)
Fun linguistics tidbit:

Mark Hamill signing his name Mar🐫 because in English /p, t, k/ sounds at the beginning of a stressed syllable are pronounced aspirated, ie with an extra breathy sound (the same sound that's h when it's by itself)

So Mark Hamill is pronounced the same as Mar Camel
18M + 1.
