Hooray 🎉 from virologists! :)
The AlphaFold Database, jointly developed with Google DeepMind, now contains datasets from specialist communities.

This includes rich datasets for microbes, viruses & parasites associated with tropical diseases.

I cherish this mug so much that I don't even use it for liquids..
And it's from the 1993 my beloved paper by Dolja and Koonin. I will forever be grateful for @thekatybrown.bsky.social for such a thoughtful gift! :)

Their work was also what got me into virology without any hesitation:)

Loved this brilliant biography of Crick by @matthewcobb.bsky.social But what struck me from the start: it's also a portrait of a lost time in science: no grant applications or teaching, big travel budgets: the job only to think, talk & get science done. Future scientific biogs will be so different.

While Logan has been wonderful for quite some time - I just recently have played with logan-search!
Such a time saving tool! 🔥 Thank you to the whole team with @rayanchikhi.bsky.social at the forefront of it 💎! 🙏🏼
Logan enables minute-scale k-mer search, and hour-scale deep homology protein alignment search, across 100+ Billion proteins.

what a phenomenally beautiful people group has @evogytis.bsky.social and @mgabrielaite.bsky.social assembled! Thx for the invite! Had a 3-day-blast talking virology and afterwards dreaming while sleeping about all my virus metagenomics people enjoying their time in Monaco 😁 (too much F1 recently...)
Last week we had a 3-day lab retreat at Vilnius University's base in Puvočiai with Lander de Coninck & @ingrida.bsky.social joining us as visitors. These retreats keep getting better & more productive thanks to the students & especially fellow PI @mgabrielaite.bsky.social. I'm super proud!

While RNA is a magnificent molecule - world is still lacking the understanding of this diverse molecule!

This is why a bunch of us, RNA enthusiasts, wrote the book "Code: RNA" to Lithuania's general public.

One of the small life joys is how Macs with M chip batteries basically never die. You travel, forget your chargers etc - never a problem.

Apple switching to ARMs MX chips is actually a reason I finally made a transition from my non-apple computer to mac.

Happy weekend!
