Also one of the first music videos I ever saw - HBO played it all the time between movies on a segment called Video Jukebox, years before MTV was available in the Midwest.
“Calling All Girls” is one of the most brilliantly over-caffeinated singles of all time. If you’ve never experienced it before, you really should:

Absolutely thought this was a Spotify link for a post-rock album. In fact, I was surprised TBFMBHC wasn't the artist's name.
This Black Fungus Might Be Healing Chernobyl By Drinking Radiation. The fungi contain melanin, which “absorbs radiation, which is then converted into usable energy, allowing it to grow in areas with intense radioactive exposure.” [forbes.com]

I said the same thing, but then my son said "blueprint blue," and he didn't even know that was a Steely Dan lyric!

I buy used/reissue vinyl and CDs from record stores and new music digitally on Bandcamp - artist gets paid, takes up even less space, and you still own it in full CD quality (sometimes better). Streaming devices from Wiim and others make it easy to play alongside physical media.
Interesting convo with a friend who owns a hip NYC record shop about a sudden renewed interest in CDs, which were a negligible part of his business till recently.

Frank Sinatra is just the tip of a whole iceberg of pre/non-rock pop music that I used to have zero respect for. I appreciate craft now, not just whether they mean it, maaan

"This Tornado Loves You" is a perfect song and so particular to Neko Case's sensibility, POV, quirks, strengths - I love when songs are these little monuments to the writer's existence, something that simply couldn't exist without the precise conditions of their being www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTL0...

had to revisit Clube da Esquina in honor of Lô Borges. perhaps the most *all timer* of all timers on my record shelves, an album I could listen to any time, any day, and feel my spirits lifting. RIP 🕯️

This articulates something I've come to understand since the internet made everything more accessible. Every successful artist we didn't like was seen as actively blocking those we loved from their rightful audience, so we hated them, instead of just saying, "eh, it's not for me"
It's sort of impossible (blessedly!) for present-day music listeners to get what it was like when the entire soundscape was only physical media and small finite numbers of broadcast outlets—every time someone played "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" meant someone NOT hearing "Fascination Street"
Calling 1989 “a perfect year in music” is like calling 1988 “a perfect year in the Soviet Bloc”

What is the rationale for dropping a popular request show? Does it cost more to form a playlist from online submissions (maybe the occasional phone call, idk) rather than programming further in advance?
89.3 The Current has dropped Radio Free Current (the all-request Saturday night show). Streams devoted to local music (Local Current), all things Prince (Purple Current) and children's music (Rock the Cradle) will end next week.

I was rooting for Milwaukee, but 3-for-3 with 3 home runs, six shutout innings and 10 strikeouts? In the first inning alone, he struck out the side and then led off the bottom of the first with a homer. The only player who could top these achievements is perhaps Ohtani himself, in the future.
Greatest game ever?
