On this date: November 9, 1973. Townes Van Zandt performed at The Whole Coffeehouse on Coffman Union at the University of Minnesota. He apparently also played the following day. The show on the 9th is widely available. Here is an ad in the Minnesota Daily the day of that performance.

Interesting dance in 1987 leading up to the Mats covering a days-old Prince single in Detroit, where the Sign o' the Times concert film had just had its world premiere.

Later known as the Flame Bar, turning to country-western music in 1955. The building still exists. Of buildings that have been spared from demolition, I’d probably put it on a list of 20 or 25 most important music history sites in Mpls. Should be a designated historic landmark some day.

David Byrne is playing Minneapolis tonight four blocks from the old Jay's Longhorn, where he and his band played 48 years and two weeks ago. That was probably his first time in Minneapolis.

Judging by newspaper ads and listings, that Thursday, Nov 2, 1995 date at the Uptown was Lifter Puller's first headlining gig. They'd been opening for other acts for over a year.

Before Prince, before The Replacements, there was Augie Garcia—the Godfather of Minnesota Rock 'n' Roll. He recorded MN's first rock record in 1955, once upstaged Elvis, and fused Latin rhythms with R&B to create something brand new. His story: mnthen.com/blog/people/...
