If there's even a .5% chance they manage to create agi this will still be stupid, because if there's even a 1.2% that I invent the infinite money machine they should've given me that money instead
Based on analysis of years of revenues, losses and funding, since 2023, OpenAI has taken in $28.6bn in cash and had $13.7bn in losses.

However, reports say OpenAI ended 1H 2025 with $9.6bn in cash - suggesting OpenAI's losses are billions higher than reported.

Hearing my gf go "omg Liverpool haven't lost by 3 at anfield since the 30's" makes me think some people are just so disconnected from Actual Football. Somehow we manage to break shittiness records (according to commentators at least) every goddamn season and I'm like 'must be a football season.'

'consumer decides' is such a fucking lie. You decide which crisps you buy but if the specific type of crisps you like aren't as popular as marketing projected then you actually don't get to choose them anymore. And when it comes to more important things you get to choose between dying & eating shit.
it does not necessarily mean this though, because the dominant way people end up on Wikipedia is through Google, and Google has loaded the top of all of its search results with AI-mediated info taken from Wikipedia. This does not mean consumers prefer it this way, the choice has been made for them
AI is separating the production and consumption of information. If direct access to Wikipedia is dropping that suggests information consumers find AI mediated consumption more useful. This will impact the production of information; including the economic model

They always say the same basic thing. They are always wrong. And we should do what we have always done and do the thing that needs doing anyway, which this time around is universal basic income and healthcare, and a 4-day workweek.

The working class should start building capacity for cyber action. Unions should probably officially disavow this idea but we are entering an era of very blatant power struggle and all pro worker activity will be more or less 'unlawful'
Couple of things here: crypto boosters need to contend with just how much easier they have made these kind of extortion scams - almost as if it were feature, not bug, of the tech.

Also, cannot be coincidence that these hacks are ramping up as Russia’s economy is feeling the sanctions squeeze.
feels a bit weird that we keep having these stories about individual cyber attacks but without anyone really joining the dots and going "okay, shall we maybe talk about this as a major global story"

You'd think so, but there's a small number of these. For every one Barcelona or Liverpool there's about 100 clubs that matter to much smaller amounts of people and will never generate meaningful profits, but which are actually crucial for the big ones to offer the profitable 'service'
soccer club ownership sits at the nexus of

-garbage business that loses money
-locked in cash flows
-millions of people are emotionally invested in your business to a borderline deranged degree

there's gotta be clever financial ways to turn that into money right

Except for when you're a right wing party, because left wing parties will absolutely refuse to wield power.

Another exception is if you're a left wing party because the right wing parties will not care if those powers exist or if there's precedent for their use.
Whenever you legislate for more powers, you shouldn’t think about what your government would do with them, but what a future bad (evil or incompetent - or both!) government might do with them.
So we're putting in a mass digital id database immediately before a potential Reform government that will use it to deport and brutalise millions of people?

Your local supermarket refusing to let you buy food without your id card in 2030 cos right to work checks morphed into right to eat checks.

This is something I've always been so creeped out by. *Even if* vaccines caused autism I think it'd be unfathomably cruel to subject your child to dangerous diseases, just because you hate people who are different.
Hate the way people talk about autism. Deeming it unhealthy is eugenics. Is it really the worst thing a child could be? You think vaccines cause autism so you'd rather risk your child dying of meningitis? You'd prefer your child to die than be autistic? Horrible ppl.

You know how people always say players who come into the premier league from abroad need to adjust to the 'physicality'? Apparently so should all of Brighton?

My Norman Rockwell painting of very brave opinions is that FPL is heresy and a sin in that it makes you cheer for players who play for wrong teams. "YES SOME CUNT IN RED OR LIGHT BLUE MADE A POINT IN THE SPORT" could never be me, disgusting

It's as if there's a... 'class' of people who own most of everything and they have this affinity with each other and their interests align resulting in a sort of 'solidarity,' and somehow certain political leaders leverage that solidarity resulting in bad outcomes for the rest of us...?

My sister, living in the USA, is asking whether it would be wiser to move to Canada or Britain. To me the whole anglo world seems burdened by multiple curses, but I think Britain would at least be closer to Ireland or another civilised society?
