If Russia and the US were genuinely willing for NATO states, including the US, to provide an "Art. 5-style" security guarantee they could just suggest that Ukraine joins NATO. They are doing the opposite, which tells us all we need to know.

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, “A Grief Observed”
basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

the demonization of social programs as things of shame and waste is pretty amazing. people smarter than I have studied and written about this but like 100 years ago in the u.s. americans were screaming for the government to help them but now it's like, if you aren't rich you must be a leech
