It's Halloween weekend, which means I'm duty bound by ancient laws to share this one: www.newyorker.com/magazine/194... And also to whisper that "Frankenstein" is very much worth everyone's time, especially the 1818 edition.
The Lottery
Fiction, from 1948: “The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions; most of them were quiet, wetting their lips, not looking around.”

There are so many Diane Keaton performances to remember, but a lot of people haven't seen Reds, and A) my God, see it, it is a masterpiece and B) her performance as Louise Bryant is one of the bravest, toughest, least sympathy-courting pieces of work by an American actress in the last 50 years.

Five days to go until the new Nobel in literature is announced, aka the literary world is in the final sprint of showing just how bad we all are at this prediction game. I can guarantee with absolute certainty, though, that Murakami, Atwood, Knausgård, and Lobo Antunes won't win. I'm positive.

Let's hear it for the marketeers and comms people, and especially all the content pros who rushed to pull this off so perfectly. Absolute chef's kiss.

Seeing a lot of these using AI to summarise books and, guys, you do you, this isn't that different from CliffNotes or such study guides, but it's also not the point of books or reading. So I'll be here, having my nice 2 hrs of reading time; on the very rare occasions I can find such 2 hrs, that is.
These people are the enemy.

A nine-minute standing ovation for the film and a weekend just around the corner? You know what that means? Perfect excuse to pick some cosy corner, grab a drink, and well, read the short story.

And then the sequels went and made it all about Palpatine all over again. Even as a simple plot excuse, it was a lousy, entirely boring option. Say what you will about Lucas and his certified terrible dialogue, but at least he actually tried some new stuff for the prequels.
Jamelle prompted me to buy this and wow, I really hope a lot of young people read and internalize this shit!!!!

I kinda can't believe this got published lol

Vamos a isto, Portugal. É votar, votar, votar.
kermit the frog is holding a cup that says vote on it
Alt: Kermit, the frog, is nonchalantly drinking from a cup that says vote on it. The scene is sunny and comforting.

Sempre um bom exercício confrontar as nossas percepções com a realidade. E vai bem com o espírito de um dia de reflexão.

So short, so good, and just about the right length to read on the bus or train while commuting somewhere.

A um imenso Abril!

Todos os anos no 25 de Abril, acabo inevitavelmente a pensar no mesmo poema, e desta vez ainda mais. "Diz" de Maria Teresa Horta começa assim:

Diz mulher
ao teu país
como lutaste até hoje

o que fizeram de ti

o que quiseram
que fosses
(...)
25 de Abril, SEMPRE!
Fascismo nunca mais.

Delightful thread, and yet another reminder that genres shapeshift not just throughout time but also depending on the medium.
THE HAUNTED HOTEL (1907) was a playful special effects fest using every form of animation available to filmmakers at the time. Stop-motion, miniatures, puppetry, wires, magnets and more, it showcased every trick in Vitagraph's arsenal.

"They produced a body of work so (...) capacious in its emotional and sonic span (...) yet so damn catchy, that talking about them in the same breath as the Rolling Stones is akin to debating how Shakespeare compares to Marlowe or Jonson"

Both love & loathe this—it's exactly right; it's just wrong.

You know what? Pretty accurate.
Science Fiction is when you call it Terra, Fantasy is when you call it Gaia

Yes, please, let the Tanith Lee renaissance begin. And since Disney has that Snow White readaptation out, I'll suggest Lee's unexpectedly metaphysical, Christian imagery heavy retelling "Red as Blood" (1979); it does something I always enjoy in Snow White stories—truly consider ideas of motherhood.

Still amuses me it turns out Ursula K. Le Guin’s influence on all my work—fiction or otherwise—has little to do with the worlds she created & all with adding more goats & critical thinking. Didn’t really see this coming but journal Via Panoramica asked & here we are.
