My essay in the @strangehorizons.bsky.social criticism special is up! I muse about genre, vibes and the difficulty of pinning things down in an ever-shifting landscape.
I promised ducks, quacking: well! @chloroformtea.bsky.social (not a duck) provides Thursday's essay on knowing genre when you see it.

"We need a more expansive approach to any attempt at definition today. The genre can and plainly does sit alongside other genres which operate on different axes."
Quacking Like A Genre
What is SF? Idk, vibes.

Recent Read: Extremophile by Ian Green

My largest complaint is I wanted more of what’s been offered: of the despicable villains and the body horror they wreak; crunchy world building and a greater exploration of biohackers and body modifications.

Could you read the second book without reading THE LAST BLADE PRIEST?

Sure, but why deny yourself. Yes you can watch a sunset without watching a sunrise. Do both, be happier. Ingest more good things. Your brain deserves it.
Here it comes! "The Dead Man's Empire", the long-awaited second book in the Holy Mountain series! Is it a sequel to "The Last Blade Priest"? Yes! But in theory you could read it without reading TLBP!
"I haven't been as surprised and enthralled by a fantasy series in years."

"Fantasy is rarely as smart, immersive or scintillant."

The Last Blade Priest by @willwiles.bsky.social?

Don't listen to us listen to Ian Green, Clarke Award-shortlisted author of Extremophile and purveyor of Rotstorm excellence.
I'm reading book 2 THE DEAD MAN'S EMPIRE right now and it is great- the first book THE LAST BLADE PRIEST is one of my favourite fantasy novels of the last few years, utterly original, some of the imagery has been etched indelibly on my brain in a way few books manage 🐦

The Dead Man's Empire by W.P. Wiles?

Don't listen to us, listen to Patrick, Carnegie Award-winning author of (the sublime) A Monster Calls and Chaos Walking trilogy.
Last Blade Priest was a terrific fantasy book. Very much looking forward to the sequel.

Just finishing this & Extremophile is definitely one of my favourites of 2025 (sneaking into 2026! Due to a reading gap over the holidays... yeah how did that happen). Exhilarating story and hard-punch writing; I so enjoyed entering this world. Very highly recommended (and great cover too)

Internet, I ask for your help: can you share your favourite UK-based bookish bloggers/influencers who might be interested in reading a book about an intersex, bisexual protagonist set in a magic circus? Think The Night Circus set in a gaslight fantasy world.

It is important to know that I wrote a whole trilogy of Knights vs UFO books, they are gorgeous, they are wonderful, and they are now also cheap.

They open with a swordfight in the shadow of a dead god and arcane lightning. Juntas, iguana-folk, animist wizards...

I was just changing a bedsheet but have been pressganged into a crew of dino pirates, and told to hide under the mattress.

Our uniform is a tie around the head. Our only joy? Treasure.

Something is jumping on the mattress above me, but I will not fail my crew
