The onslaught and genocide that transpired across the continent—waves of settlers, smallpox epidemics, broken treaties, militia campaigns, Christian conversion, the creation of reservations, the relentless theft of land—occurred in Maryland two centuries before the Trail of Tears and Plains Wars.

Two centuries before the Trail of Tears, English colonists drove Maryland’s Indigenous tribes from their land. Piscataway descendants want people to know their history.

On this day in 1965, Morrison set himself on fire outside Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's office. “I reacted to the horror by bottling my emotions, [not discussing] them with anyone—even my family,” McNamara said. “I knew [they] shared many of his feelings about the war.”

Longtime readers know the true villain of American politics is the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929. Repealing this and restructuring Supreme Court are the bare minimums of fixing government in this country. Bare minimums.

(Yes, I want mulit-member districts too. Good luck trying for those.)
It's not just geography... it's the fixed number in the House. Since 1920 every new census has disadvantaged more populous states.

It's a lack of fair apportionment. Which not only means more populous states have fewer representatives, they have fewer electoral votes.
America's political geography means Democrats are naturally disadvantaged under single-member districts even if you draw fair, neutral maps. They are less efficiently distributed, perversely punished because they have *more* voters in both safe red seats and deep blue ones.

Jail is not treatment. Not for addiction. Not for grief. To lock someone up after a painful death is torture.

Cuomo and Bartiromo, two Italian Americans, repurposing the same type of xenophobia, bigotry, and religious prejudice that was used to discriminate against Italian Catholic immigrants.
So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."
