when I worked at a school in Maine I had to explain at a staff meeting why I took issue w/ a student asking “is that a picture of Oprah?” when I was teaching about Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With,” the painting depicting Ruby Bridges being escorted to an integrated school

When you see unhoused people asking for money what you should see is a fracturing of the social contract where an issue (housing) that should be addressed on a municipal or statuary level is instead foisted on individuals in a way designed o put callouses on their souls
