This is an almost shockingly wise essay. I'm glad I've finally read it.
There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

If you don’t yet follow @eastlondongroup.bsky.social then do. You’ll be treated to beautiful pictures and a lovely authoritative commentary.
This is "Stone Cottages" by John Cooper from the collection at the Hepworth, Wakefield. The painting is undated but I suspect that it comes from 1936 & that it could be either his exhibited paintings of "The Pink Mountain" or "The Road to Snowdon" rom that year #JohnCooper #EastLondonGroup

One of those slightly awkward British public transport journeys. I do not dispute her good hearted desire to save a busful of people at a time but all the usual avoidance strategies were played strongly. Hats off to the woman who pointed out, immensely politely, that she was already catered for.

FIFTY BILLION LITRES OF EFFLUENT!

Discharged, not into the sea (which would be bad enough), but into a LAKE!
Fueling the growth of toxic algae, and starving aquatic life of oxygen.
United Utilities is a greedy, disgusting and irresponsible company.

This is deeply shocking from the #BBC. Cowardice or risk management look the same.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Since 2020, the RNLI has carried out 3,600 rescues for people cut off by the tide. Knowing how tides behave isn’t optional — it’s survival knowledge.
Martin Austin reports. From The Conversation -- thanks!

Misunderstanding the tide puts millions at risk
Tidal literacy is a matter of life and death. But many people do not understand tides, and many only survive because of the rescue services

Fifteen years of ideological choices to strangle & gut the public realm - NHS to schools to social services to local museums - is what underlies the anger "tearing our country apart"; immigration is simply the scapegoat that the far right are pushing people toward.
Why can't Labour just say this?
