Hello bsky friends, my name is Marcus, and I'm a newly minted PhD in molecular bio who is currently looking for work in the PNW!

This account posts about public health, science, and lefty politics. Happy to be on bsky and I look forward to lively discussion and good interactions!
Feeding into antivax conspiracies/RFK rhetoric from an activist role also contributes to the violent radicalization. Conspiracy and inaccuracies are invalid critiques and don't improve public health, yet *everyone*just leans into them.

Mostly silence on the shooting from COVID aware folks too.
Feel like this needs a spotlight: employees were told that the shooting at CDC, which left an officer dead and buildings riddled with bullets, was targeted at agency, @lenasun.bsky.social, @laurenweberhp.bsky.social and @tobiaraji.bsky.social report

Years of anti-CDC rhetoric has consequences

"We reviewed the science, listened to the experts, and acted..."

Words really don't mean anything anymore, do they?

The incompetence is staggering, the political motives, clear as day.

This goes out to all the people who won’t shut up about optimism and what a great opportunity this is to “fix” science by gutting the training pipeline and eliminating peer review
I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff.

"Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (@science.org)
‘It’s a nightmare.’ U.S. funding cuts threaten academic science jobs at all levels

I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.

No more detailed reporting. No more preventative health. No more research. No more accessibility.

You want to argue eugenics, that’s fucking eugenics.

Everyone…

It doesn’t just stop at ACIP. The strategy is not just approvals but will eventually filter down to how your provider will be able to operate

Every single one of RFK and companies goals is to completely incapacitate the current medical institution and keep everyone in the dark

Fun fact: in the 1960s, Civil Rights protestors were given literal classes on nonviolent protest; they didn't all just spontaneously know what to do.

So, if you're planning on showing up, this weekend: read this comic. And if you're staying home, signal-boost it/link it around.
I did my best to compile as many protest safety notes as possible into a one page foldout zine! Coincidentally…it seems the file has breached containment…like it’s available for anyone to print or hand out 👀⚖️

Anyways I double checked to make sure this was accurate and the account links to his blog and describes a Rush and UCLA trained EM physician so it appears to be genuine.

It also means I did more fact checking than those fuckers at Alt CDC and Alt NPS.

Another reason to go get your vaccines/boosters ASAP. Get your titers drawn if you need to. This list is the worst of the worst. No new vaccines seems likely, and we'll see how many of the ones we have get revoked.

If we get H5N1, we're cooked. BAD.

The attacks on the civilian population of LA are becoming more violent and more overtly authoritarian, and brutal. These are the tactics of a paramilitary terror force nothing else.

These are rightwing death squads in the making.

BREAKING: A few minutes ago, a vehicle of three people was rammed by a truck belonging to federal immigration authorities in Boyle Heights, CA. According to security footage shown to me, they deployed chemical munitions & detained the driver at gunpoint. All are US citizens according to the wife.

Pepperballs contain powdered PAVA, an oily, synthetic capsaicin analog. The only reliable way to remove it is with a good surfactant soap and water. 1/

Better get vaxxed while you still can. Check your titers if you need to by going to the doctor if unsure.

Might be good for folks to dig out their masks again since vaccines aren't perfect and rates will continue to go down because of RFK.
