That's a point as valid for the EU and UK as it is for Ukraine
Security guarantees from Trump can’t be relied on. He treats any decision point as an opportunity for extortion.
The Trump admin has indicated to Ukraine that US security guarantees are contingent on Kyiv first agreeing a peace deal that would likely involve ceding the Donbas region to Russia…

The media are fixated on the Trump Administration’s fascist rhetoric & bloody repression.
Europe’s leaders must focus on what would actually weaken fascists: Defend Ukraine. Free Iran. Dismantle the Russian war machine and the global networks propping it up.

In case you’ve ever wondered how you can engineer a sudden drop in your popularity among people who live in countries that belong to NATO, the answer is now in: Either invade Ukraine or elect Donald Trump as your president.

He doesn’t actually believe this.

But for NATO to survive (in its current form) Europe needs to remain reliant on the US.

And it’s clear that’s not the long-run direction of travel.

Please. This is absurd. Europe can certainly deter Russia and defend itself if its focused and determined. Perpetuating a sense of European helplessness may help Rutte bureaucratically but its 1. wrong 2. prevents action. 3. willfully blind: the US ain't coming to defend Europe.
“If anyone thinks here… that the European Union or Europe as a whole can defend itself without the US, keep on dreaming,” Nato SecGen Mark Rutte told the European Parliament. “You can’t.”

“It will make things more complicated. I think Putin will love it. So think again.”
