Curious how others handle it when they suspect students of unauthorized, unreported AI use on assignments. Have you found anything that has worked well? I'm not really looking to fail the students but I'd like to have a talk with them and get them to cut it out

thinking about the amount of side-eye I received from my students the other day while talking about freedom of the press as a cultural value in this country and I can't decide if their jadedness is a good sign for future generations or just depressing 😞 it says a lot about our current moment 👀

It’s wild that there are people who are like “I’m scared my professor is anti-fascist”

I was raised on the Washington post. It's horrible seeing how far it has fallen... I wrote in weeks ago to tell them off for giving RFK a platform for his misinformation but apparently they take pride in that now.

If this ceasefire happens - and I hope it does - Western media will talk about 'peace'. This will be inaccurate. What they will mean is 'quiet', a reversion to the background level of violence that Palestinians have faced for decades. Peace can only come with the end of the occupation and apartheid.

Ah the joys of being treated like you're trying to rob the university after going out of your way to spend less (took an awful red eye out of a way less convenient airport & for my efforts, I got $5 for breakfast so I wouldn't fall asleep at the wheel during the drive home)

When I spoke to my students about the potential dangers of AI, they were shocked to learn about cases like this.
I got the complaint in the horrific OpenAI self harm case the the NY Times reported today

This is way way worse even than the NYT article makes it out to be

OpenAI absolutely deserves to be run out of business

Reading yet another graduate thesis and wishing yet again that other Asian Americanists would not let their graduate students get away with calling Japanese American incarceration "Japanese internment" in this day & age. 1) it lets the US completely off the hook.

Disgusting. May I recommend instead @overhearddistrict's Instagram round up of everything Washingtonians are actually scared of? It's a much more informative and a better use of one's time. DC rats figure high on multiple lists.
The White House’s official X account has a long thread in which they’ve posted pictures of people arrested during the feds’ occupation of the city. Every single person in the thread is a person of color.

#NAIS folks, looking for recs on articles/books on how the notion that the land wasn't being used was weaponized to force Indigenous people to give up more of their land. Allotment is one example (or a million) but it's all over the place really & I'd love to see how others are thinking about it

When I say that I as a Black anti-Zionist Jew in New Hampshire actually have to deal with *real* antisemitism I mean this happened today

Also yes I almost cannot believe this was a protest against Trump but here we are in 2025

outrageous. you are responsible for the moral and ethical choices you make as a lawyer. the people you work for and against (and in this case, the public) have a right to know if you are conflicted.

cowardly and unethical, the whole thing.
Lawyers for ICE are increasingly hiding their identities in court. This is completely unprecedented.

“We’re not really doing names publicly,” said Judge ShaSha Xu — after stating her own name and those of the immigrants and their lawyers.

WOW. A lawyer told @miamiherald.com that a Florida Highway Patrol agent told her that they are calling Border Patrol to investigate anyone who "appears Hispanic" that they pull over.

That is direct evidence of racial profiling — said over the phone to a lawyer! They aren't even hiding it!

Yet another reason to abhor the techbros pushing gAI into every single thing: they know about the biases embedded in their tech, they DO NOT CARE about its detrimental consequences for women or people of color.
A boost over the paywall to see that just like the humans it trains on, genAI wants everyone who isn't an otherwise healthy educated white man to die

I'm not totally prepared to dismiss it all yet, but so far it seems like AI helps lazy people be lazy. ...and it is only okay at that.
The things people tell me ChatGPT is good at doing keep turning out to be things it’s really fundamentally flawed and disastrous at doing. My theory that it’s not good at anything and it’s offensive to pretend otherwise remains ironclad
