I have found this framing to be the most clarifying. Our entire society for the last thousand years has been based on the superiority of (white) men. Which is, of course, a fiction. That means a LOT of time and energy needs to go into shoring up their superiority and the inferiority of everyone else
This is the best explanation of patriarchy that I've ever seen: if we decide that wealth and power go to men just because they're men, then men must be superior. If men are superior, then women must be inferior, and we work to arrange the evidence to meet our conclusions.
