I have never been this angry reading a book about music before. Genuinely believe we’re going to reach a breaking point when this book comes out, either you care about music or your care about hyper-personalized audio content.
"We know that Big Tech and Spotify have reshaped music listening – and at a cost. But that impact is often hidden inside a black box, closely guarded by its masters’ secrecy and mythmaking. Liz Pelly is one of the few who managed to get inside that black box and her upcoming book will be essential."
Mood Machine, Liz Pelly's book on Spotify, will be a must-read - CDM Create Digital Music

Either we fight to create a world within which justice is applied universally, rights are protected universally, and liberation for *all* is the bedrock of our efforts, or it is merely a matter of time before we or our children sit at the wrong end of the injustice we foster.

Genuinely think anyone can “git gud” at any creative craft they are interested in. If we wanted to actually “democratize” art we would invest in housing, healthcare, food and education as human rights. All GenAI does is make people even more financially precarious and less able to pursue a passion
I think a bit of the "AI is democratizing art" argument is trying to avoid the ugly truth that to get good at anything you have to do a lot of it. I grew up "knowing" I was a good writer, but I really wasn't until about 700k words, and it took reading hours of scripts to really have a voice

This is already happening and the answer is: It turns to shit even faster
So, I've been thinking about @scalzi.com 's post the other day about how AI just mines old human work so they don't have to be paid for future work. What happens when it runs out of old human work to mine (like Stack Overflow) because we all use AIs to get answers instead of creating new work?

"Disrupt" is code for "Destroy reliable established services so that money previously widely distributed now funnels into a single source." Just like "AI" is code for "Mine the work humans did in the past so we don't have to pay them for their work in the future." That's why VCs like both words.
“Disrupt” is a very Silicon Valley word. Every time I see it crop up in a business-case, my bullshit-detection hackles go up.

Here’s the thing: we are not the first people to go through this. People live and organize under authoritarian & fascist governments all over the world. We don’t get to throw in the towel — AND, we’re not alone, and not without guidance. This is part of the power of grassroots internationalism.
I am trying to be patient because I 100% get that people are terrified but I am really struggling with all this knee-jerk public defeatism from other liberals and leftists right now

Much of the justification for creating the International Criminal Court was the fact that Nazi Germany committed genocide.

That Germany has now said it will defy the court to continue committing genocide shows that Nazi Germany is still alive and well.

With 1 in 5 children in the UK living in poverty, pensioner winter fuel payments cut and austerity ripping apart our communities, it is simply unconscionable for the taxpayer to have to fund the lifestyle of the Royals.

The time is well overdue to abolish the monarchy.

Galling to me to read so many takes about music journalism not being necessary now because you can just listen to a song and decide if you like it or not. Criticism is about helping the reader understand why it is that they like it, or do not, and connecting the cultural dots of a work's meaning.
