I love this thread about one of the most confounding things ever riffed on MST3k, THE STARFIGHTERS. A film with the full cooperation and resources of the U.S. Air Force, and yet so dramatically inert it could be sold as an anesthetic
I've spent an inconsiderable amount of time trying to figure how certain MST3k movies got made, but the one that especially continues to baffle me is The Starfighters. It's a loosely disguised informercial/preemptive defense of the Lockheed F-104, but why make that into a feature-length film?

New from me. The “WTO/99” documentary is a timely reminder that the history of police repression repeats, and repeats, and repeats.
Then @joeyneverjoe.bsky.social write about the new documentary "WTO/99" and the similarities between the "Battle of Seattle" and the police violence people throughout the country are experiencing today.

Fran Lebowitz called Donald Trump a stupid person’s idea of a smart person. In that spirit I call Emerald Fennell a gullible person’s idea of Lynne Ramsay.

I saw Fennell’s first two features and am currently operating on the “fool me twice” ticket buying program.

Death is a Caress (Edith Carlmar, 1949): Norway’s first feature directed by a woman! Fascinatingly, aggressively sexual, with open hetero marriages that would confound American indies today. (I’m looking at you, Splitsville!!) And pro-abortion!!

With rare exceptions "the good stuff" can be easily experienced, with all manner of restorations, remasters, and so forth which accent its timelessness.

And that's great! But the greasy reality lives in the instantly dated knots of ephemera which no one thought were worth keeping.

In meat processing terms, "skeletal meat" is the stuff that sticks close to the bone which is marginal for the average consumer (unless you're making broth) but can be boiled off and salvaged (into cold cuts, hot dogs, Spam, etc) on an industrial level.

I live for the retrotrash equivalent of it.
