Looking forward to seeing this book in real life later for Luke Pepera's book launch - MOTHERLAND
Happy #PubDay to Luke Pepera! I had the privilege of reading an advance copy of MOTHERLAND and it blew me away.

MOTHERLAND leads us expertly through age after age of astoundingly rich history and culture. An enlightening read that is sure to top many awards lists.

Max Eisen was a Hungarian Jew. His family were sent to Auschwitz. His mother, grandparents and siblings were separated from him on the platform and were murdered & incinerated within minutes.

He was 15. He survived by working in the infirmary.

I have a few girls' adventure books on my shelves, awarded to my late mother by her Sunday school when she was 9 or 10. I remember reading them when I was a similar age - especially this one about "the small & grimy" yet "independent & cheerful" Lee Morris who desperately wanted to be a girl guide

Impossible to overstate @thehistoryguy.bsky.social 's achievement. I remember the pre-History Hit era when Dan realised podcasts had potential & there were opportunities emerging for multi-platform broadcasting. He turned an idea, he discussed over pints in pubs, into a huge success.
We started a history TV channel in 2018 with nothing but a crowdfunder & enthusiasm. We were playing in a world of billion dollar giants.
This year we won a Best Channel award, attracted ever more subscribers and made these stunning original documentaries

Contemplating changing the working title of my current book project (which is about 18th-century diamonds) from "Diamonds: something something 18th century" to "Greed: something something 18th century and all the people in this book are pretty vile"

Struggling to find many characters that are likeable in my current project. Rogue of the day today is Philip Rundell of Rundell & Bridge (1746-1827), a millionaire goldsmith with a showroom at 32 Ludgate Hill and not, but all accounts, a very pleasant individual.. /1

Disappointed that I can't make the Wolfson History Prize reception later. Evidently my annual tradition is to plan to go until events conspire against me. I will enjoy envying my colleagues toasting the winner at Claridges (because of course history is always as glamorous as Claridges). 🥂

This obituary for the award-winning costume designer of Peaky Blinders, Stephanie Collie, is a wonderful tribute to her research process and skill. It’s easy to criticise costumes in TV historical dramas, but historical inaccuracies are rarely errors, they’re often storytelling choices
