Finally got a minute to do a quick writeup on how I printed the arcade cabinet, since many folks asked about making their own.

Mute City (Arcade)
Someone showed up in an online community I frequent, asking around $4000 for a classic SEGA 'Astro City' arcade cabinet. I've always wanted one, but almost immediately I realized I'd have to drive fiv...

This distills several of the ideas I've been trying to get across to otherwise-sensible-people in the last while, both in and out of games:
- There's always a reason why decisions get made (even if sometimes the reason is bad)
- The more invested someone is, the less they can be trusted to judge it
Today's Load-bearing Tomato addresses the age old question:

"why don't the devs just [SOCIAL MEDIA OPINION]"

It turns out, "a lot of reasons", but if you never have to test your ideas, you never have to discover why they're not any good.

Hauled the Mute City out to Perfect Storm this weekend, now featuring realistic panel weathering (definitely not due to cheap vinyl) and my new signage that'll hopefully save me a few questions

Every day I wake up and step out the door into cold that could kill.
But by grit, wit, spit, writ, and the collective calluses of endless people I'll never get the chance to know, I survive.
That's pretty cool. Hard to remember, sometimes; but hard to forget, these days.

This is a patch I made to fix some incorrect text, in one regional language version of a very old game, that few will play due to its poor reputation.

I don't know if this will matter to anyone. But I had the skills to do it, and if even one person benefits, why not?
Merveillez, comme je l'ai fait.

Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

Turns out if you can't get an Astro City, you can just print your own. Much assembly required, though.

I strongly believe in the breadth and influence of independent art, to grant us oblique angles on the world and ourselves.
But also every indie game is somewhere on this spectrum:
