As a political thinker, Hannah Arendt grappled with evil based on the experiences of her time. She initially found the Nazis' unimaginable atrocities incomprehensible because, from a military perspective, the mass killing of women, men, and children simply seemed unnecessary. Similarly, the violence and horror of the Assad regime, which transformed Syria into a prison for its inhabitants over several decades, often seemed unimaginable. One person who experienced and survived this firsthand is Yassin Al-Haj Saleh. In his four essays, presented here for the first time in German, he critically engages with Hannah Arendt's thought in order to develop concepts of a philosophy situated in the Syrian experience: thinking as an undogmatic form of co-thinking, the absent as a third element that transcends dialogue, state and time as a relationship that unites in totalitarianism, and finally an elaboration of the concept of evil, which here is not only conceived as banal, but also as physically intimate, as in the torture prisons of Syria, and as normalized, as in the war on terror.

Prosecutors in Milan have opened an investigation into Italians who allegedly paid members of the Bosnian Serb army for trips to Sarajevo so that they could kill citizens during the four-year siege of the city in the 1990s. More than 10,000 people were killed in Sarajevo by constant shelling and sniper fire between 1992 and 1996 in what was the longest siege in modern history, after Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia.

Machine learning is a neat tool, but clearly companies are desperate to give “AI” credit for what human scholars accomplish in part because companies have bet the farm on the idea that human ingenuity is expendable. This historian is extraordinary and deserves the real credit.

Oh, man. After reading the article, what it actually says is that an historian did a lot of archival work and spatial research to determine the site of a killing and then the family of the likely perpetrator stepped forward with photographs to confirm identity.

Only reminds me of Western liberal prof who tried and failed to stop the forced removal of the Central European University from Budapest. The opponents (then Fidesz) are not gentlemen, they rewrite the rules at whim. Tactics and strategy need ethics & muscle or at least willingness to land a punch
