This was also the speculation at my first MSG shows 27 years ago, because of the mail order ticket stubs. Maybe it’ll be true this time…

New year’s gag: Phish plays the opening chords of Party Time. As they’re going, crew members wheel a ping pong table to center stage.

Then, out comes Timothee Chalamet, just in time for the band to sing the song’s first lyrics:

MARTY TIME!

Try to guess the speaker:

“As a homosexual, my job is simply to sodomize mediocrity. I am terrified and horrified and shocked that anyone would mention Phish in any article related to me.”

「ミートスティック」の時間だ、ミートスティックを隠して、ミートスティックを取り出す、時間だ。うわ、頭がショック
UPDATE: We may see the first time English is displaced as the most popular language among Bluesky posters as soon as Americans head to sleep tonight.

Japanese users were close to achieving that feat at 7 am Eastern Time, and their activity is increasing at an exponential pace. This is remarkable.

Spent 2025 learning that collapse is cumulative, intimate, and somehow full of unexpected beauty. Music was essential this year, not as escape but as companion and survival strategy. Here are the albums that helped me stay present and keep dreaming anyway.

Incredible words.

I remember at one of the 2016 debates, the candidates were asked to say something they admired about each other, and Hillary said he loved his family. It was the best answer she could’ve given, yet even it was obviously false. More than anyone I’ve ever known, the guy is without redeeming qualities.
Virginia Heffernan wrote this shortly after the 2016 election and it still holds true

Bingo. And struggle, frustration, and even failure are *essential* parts of the creative experience.
I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury

A beautuful thread about Rob Reiner.
I’m just going to tell the story. Back in 2000 I was volunteering for the Gore campaign when he came along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alfre Woodard and Dule Hill to a GOTV event here in MN. He ended up sitting down across from me stuffing his envelopes.

This is a great story, and this paragraph is an excellent description of an occasional phenomenon in great Phish sets, wherein the jams seem to be controlling the band, instead of the other way around.

It’s been fun to see northeasterners get sucked into the SML wormhole that Socalers have gotten to spend some time in.

Don’t miss them if you have the chance.
had my head properly spun by SML at sultan room. bit less abstract than i was expecting, but maybe more magical, especially the imperceptible studio-like blend between jeremiah chiu's modular synth & booker stardrum's beats (& maybe sax & guitar loops?), building to over-the-top bubble-jazz grooves.

Josh’s blog is such a pleasure to read, and I love that his list includes a bunch of stuff I’ve never heard, in addition to stuff I already like. I strongly recommend reading it even though it includes Goose.
I wrote about more music than ever this year at No Expectations, so I compiled what I think are the 100 Best Albums of 2025. If you don't recognize a lot of the names here, don't worry. That's the point. I hope you find something new to dig. www.noexpectations.fyi/p/the-100-be...
