If actors want a tool to fight against AI Dubbing on Amazon's platform, we have to do the actual work.

SAG-AFTRA can't step in and fight for us.

We ARE the union.

If actors want a union Amazon Dubbing Agreement, we have to, at bare minimum, stop working for them non-union.

We held a giant, in-person meeting back in the day and the then-head of the VO division of SAG-AFTRA compiled a list of how many people were in attendance.

This armed her with a talking point in the greater Netflix Agreement negotiations to add a Netflix Dubbing Agreement as part of the discussion.

I think we need to change the way we talk about SAG-AFTRA. Not a dig at Jeff here (I too would like to see a SAG-AFTRA Amazon Agreement,) but we've got to stop referring to SAG-AFTRA as an organization that can just "step in" and do stuff.
I just wanna see SAG-AFTRA step in & establish a dubbing agreement with Amazon much like the Netflix agreement. That would be the best path forward.

Additionally, there is a voiceover Wages and Working Conditions meeting for the TV/Theatrical contract on Dec 12th focusing on VO. I'd recommend talking about it here, too. Perhaps not 100% on topic, but dubbing is a modification of that agreement

"the union is a third party, let's resolve our issues directly" is a common management anti-union talking point, but I think pro-union folks also too often think of "the union" as a separate entity that can solve their problems for them, instead of a vehicle for members to create change themselves.

Everyone’s favorite company that absolutely would never use AI in any way because that would be bad is doing a big old collab with Duolingo this coming week and you’ll likely hear no protesting about that from the usual anti-AI crew who love this game

That's why union actors should show up to W&W meetings. Full transparency, I roll my eyes whenever somebody complains about a contract, only for me to ask if they ever showed up to a meeting, and for them to say, "No, but they should know better."

*We* are "they."

Today (and only today!) is the English dub showing of Virgin Punk in select theaters across the country. I had the pleasure of writing, casting and directing it (you may also hear me as a Hitchcock-style cameo here and there).

Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

🧵⬇️
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

Wow, I was terrified to listen to this, but… it’s… absolute RUBBISH.

It sounds like a joke done for Adult Swim.

I’d cry laughing if it weren’t coming for our livelihoods.

Having pondered it a bit today, I think what money-minded people are missing is that hiring humans is about connection between the audience and the material.

Human artists steward that connection when they translate/caption/write/perform, and there's honed methods, but its not a science.

Everyone else will see this and think it sounds like garbage.

You can HEAR the lack of intention in every line the AI slops out. At least the TTS voices on stuff like Arby n’ the Chief were funny.

When your priority is racing to the bottom in terms of budget and turnaround, this is what you will be left with.

Why would I bother to compete with this as an artist? If this is all corporations are willing to invest in, and they want to use my work to train+create more, why work with corps?

Honest to God I think your average novice voice actor on Twitter or Bluesky could do an infinitely better fandub of this from home.

…Hell, why don’t you? Call it the “Banana Fish Challenge”. Dub a scene from the show in English and show the suits at Amazon how shit they are.
