Stamps School of Art & Design Dear Colleagues, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will continue at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design because our academic program and DEl initiatives are legally compliant, in alignment with our university values, and an extension of the mission of our school. What I have offered informally and formally in the past two years remains: we are living through a historically difficult moment, perhaps unprecedented. Difficulty defines our era. And yet difficulty must be confronted. Difficulty is at the center of our methods as artists and designers, which seeks to materialize new knowledge, ideas, and interventions to heal ourselves, our society, and its relation to the land. The path ahead will continue to be difficult, regardless of presidential, national, or university politics. Almost all of the “local programs” threatened with cuts here are workforce development programs aimed at training people in jobs and skills that are in demand.

Exactly the programs employers say they want.

Oh, and many of them are earmarks for senators and house members.

Child care investments working in MN.

The recent opening of a new site in Crystal by New Horizon Academy highlighted the impact of the 2023 actions the then-DFL-controlled Legislature and Gov. Tim Walz. They lifted the amount of state assistance that lower-income families receive to access child care centers and they created a compensation-support program for child care providers. “The combination of solving the staffing crisis, plus having more families be able to afford quality care, gave us confidence to open the school in Crystal again,” Chad Dunkley, chief executive of New Horizon, told me after a ribbon-cutting event Monday.

As I've been sharing for a few months, Minnesota has been doing really interesting things with higher ed policy that I think would be useful both in the short term and in a longer term shift to reorienting higher ed back to being a public good

Yes & there's a better relationship (the bar is in hell) with the regional public institutions as compared to other states. Then you add on that they introduced affordable tuition policies with extra funding. Why I highlighted them in a piece I wrote for Brookings:

As one example, Minnesota moved to reduce the price of tuition through tuition freezes and the introduction of a promise program that guarantees no tuition for students with family incomes below $80,000—while providing additional funding to public institutions to offset the loss in tuition revenue. Pairing tuition reduction with increased funding is critical given that a college education is subsidized (tuition does not cover all the expenses of educating a student). Without the additional funding, institutions in the United States would face the issues seen by institutions in the UK, where reduced tuition revenues were not paired with additional funding, leading to precipitous drops in education quality.
