“As every student of exploration knows, the prize goes not to the explorer who first sets foot upon the virgin soil but to the one who gets that foot home first. If it is still attached to his leg, this is a bonus”

You could read Stephen’s speech in Acts 7, or just refer to the Peanuts from June 20, 1980

It really is just simple geometry.

You cannot build a functional city if everyone brings a 2-ton living room on wheels with them.
The entrance to the 3-storey bike parking garage at Utrecht Central holding 12,500 bicycles. It’s free for the first 24 hours, linked to the station, and used by tens of thousands every day. This is what happens when a country treats bikes as real transport infrastructure, not an afterthought.

Next up. Was at the library and needed the physical version of this anyway. Cooking from the get go as always.

Saw a reel about it, but I really think there’s going to be a historical comp to make between the BBB ICE funding and the compromise of 1850/Fugitive slave act. Not just in the way it terrorizes citizens, but in the way it seems to be galvanizing people to actually hold more progressive positions.

“A pessimist gets nothing but pleasant surprises, and optimist nothing but unpleasant.” What an amazing line.

Gosh the “remain peaceful” stuff from NC officials is so hollow. Add to that the constant need to seem tough on crime and we just end up with a bunch of half-hearted, mealy-mouthed nonsense when what we need are actual leaders and actual leadership.

Sorry, I can’t believe any country is in good shape when people have to start worrying about carrying their papers around.

Boomer nostalgia is mostly nonsense, but it’s undeniable there was something special in the water from about 71-74. Maybe just enough time for counterculture to mature a little but before the drugs really went sour.

Next up, the first one was a joy. Penny really lays out the setting and characters before the crime. Feeling it all falling into place is really satisfying.

We are still fighting the battles of reconstruction
I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:

In retrospect, the Farm bill loophole was the perfect way to legalize cannabis. Basically building up a shadow industry that could take on more formal regulation. I wish I had any confidence this is actually how it will go.

Going to post in a new thread for SD posting because I don’t want to clout chase in the Hawken retweet. This rips obviously. Stand outs besides the singles are Midnite Cruiser and Brooklyn. Been spinning it all day.

Back to mysteries after a foray into reading (as opposed to listening to) nonfiction. I’m so deeply uncomfortable with “obsessive men making bad choices.” Bad Blood is great though, so I’m still excited for the crossover.
