I get paid to talk about Jesus, so I wouldn’t trust a word I say.

It is absolutely amazing that this was written pre-9/11. Just makes very clear that all the currents were there.

If we need cops or something like them, they must be beholden to the common good rather than to the governments or laws they ostensibly serve.

“A watchman is a citizen, you inbred streak of piss!”

STP is wise in many ways, but the theory of policing he puts forth in these is especially so. Just that reminder that cops aren’t supposed to be militarized or set apart from civilians is so important.

“‘Well, that’s society for you, I’m afraid,’ said Carrot. ‘Everything is dumped on the people below until you find someone who’s prepared to eat it. That’s what Mr. Vines says.’”

I was not prepared for this to be a nice companion to Shenon’s Warren Commission book.

"What's in it for the Klatchians?" said Lord Downey.
"Oh, they've gone out there because they are a bunch of unprincipled opportunists always ready to grab something for noth-ing" said Lord Vetinari.

"Why are our people going out there?" said Mr. Boggis of the
Thieves' Guild.
"Because they are showing a brisk pioneering spirit and seeking wealth and … additional wealth in a new land," said Lord Vetinari.

This is going to be a favorite, I can already tell. I’ll go for anything that tears apart nationalism.

Having recently been reading about British imperialism I’m pretty amped for this one.

Called it! Luckily I don’t care if the conclusion of a mystery is a surprise or not.

These are so wonderfully propulsive! Halfway through and I’m just pumping my fist and turning pages.

This paragraph at the end of section two is so stunning. Manchester is very clear that WWII was the culmination of WC’s life, and setting up where he is compared to his peers of that war says so much about who he was and about the way he grew into the person he became.

Wow, maybe my favorite so far? The vibes on this are so good.

Extremely charmed about 20% in! Only problem is none of my libraries has all of these on Libby so I’ll have to check used stores or get another card.
