Pick any case over the last century & a half where democracy crumbled into some form of autocracy. Chances are, the center-right played a crucial facilitating role, and the way they justified it is always, always through reference to some looming (largely fantastical) threat from the left.

Most people with power, outside and even inside democracies, would prefer autocracy (with them & their people in charge) over any further advance of egalitarian democracy. And as we're seeing, this includes many self-identified liberals.
